The Washington Commanders have good news on their franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels’ injury situation. The Commanders made a recent decision on how to manage his health after he sustained a dislocated elbow against the Dallas Cowboys in the second quarter of a game on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
He took a snap under center before left guard Chris Paul stepped on Daniels’ foot as he backed away from the line. Daniels used his non-throwing arm to guard his fall, which bent awkwardly under the weight. Reports from the Commanders’ camp present the latest outlook after widespread consultations with top medical professionals across the country. For Daniels, the situation isn’t completely new, considering that he dealt with a similar situation last season.
Jayden Daniels’ Health Condition Appears Less Complicated Than Previously Thought
According to a report from General Manager Adam Peters, the team has reportedly found an alternative medical solution to Daniels’ elbow injury. Peters said the quarterback returned late Thursday night and met with the Commanders on Friday. They will not place him on the Injury Reserve list, raising expectations that we could see the quarterback again on the pitch sooner than expected. Daniels couldn’t complete Sunday’s game against the Cowboys after what came across as a gruesome-looking condition. Besides the unsavory news of missing a top quarterback, the Commanders also endured a 37-20 loss to the Cowboys by the end of the game. The announcement means the Commanders might expect Daniels to return within a month. The franchise announced it planned to consult specialists in choosing the best course of action outside surgery.
Last season, after he sustained the same injury during a Week 9 game, Daniels was sidelined for a little over a month and missed three matches, with a bye week sandwiched in between. His injury issues may have temporarily derailed a promising career after the former LSU star led the Commanders to the NFC Championship game in his first season.
Like the Commanders did last season, they now turn to veteran Marcus Mariota in Daniels’ absence. Mariota’s skills and experience could be in high demand as the franchise hosts the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The game is no doubt a crucial encounter as they look to turn the tide in a season that began with back-to-back losses against the NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys.
The 32-year-old registered 11 of 16 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown against Dallas after coming on in the second half. He featured in 11 games for Washington last season as Daniels dealt with a number of injuries.
Being placed on the IR list meant a player could miss at least 4 games. Considering the franchise chose not to place Daniels on the Injury Reserve list, it appears Daniels would return on or before their Week 6 Monday Night Football road encounter against the San Francisco 49ers.
