Jaxon Kohler cuts list and will reportedly make a decision today

The recruitment of Michigan State transfer Jaxon Kohler is near the finish line, and Kentucky Basketball is still in the running.

According to KSR’s Jack Pilgrim, Kohler is set to make a decision today. He’s also cut his list down to Kentucky and BYU.

Kansas and Louisville were in the mix, but it’s now down to the Wildcats and the Cougars. Both programs had Zoom meetings with Kohler on Wednesday, with Kentucky’s meeting lasting about 2.5 hours.

Kentucky is still waiting to see what happens with Missouri Tigers transfer Mark Mitchell, but while he may be a better player, keeping him eligible throughout next season will be difficult since he’s an SEC transfer.

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has said that, despite recent court rulings granting eligibility to all class of 2022 players like Mitchell and Kohler, league transfer rules remain in effect and prohibit intraconference transfers for players who did not enter the portal during the spring window.

That said, Tennessee recently took a commitment from former Vanderbilt center Jalen Washington, who did not enter the portal until August, so one school has already challenged this rule.

Still, it appears Kentucky is willing to take a commitment from Kohler for that 15th and final roster spot next season. For now, BYU remains the favorite and is expected to eventually land a commitment from the Utah native, who grew up 15 minutes away from the Cougars’ campus.

But Kentucky has done enough to make this interesting heading down the home stretch…
