Jannik Sinner ends his 2026 season

2026 Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner took to social media to announce that his 2026 tennis season is over. Sinner, the two-time defending ATP Finals champion, will not defend his title at home in Turin this year.

Sinner has not played since Wimbledon. He is dealing with a knee injury. In his video message, he said that in conjunction with his doctors, he is pulling the plug because his knee needs more treatment.

Like his friendly foe, Carlos Alcaraz, said multiple times this year, Sinner is looking out for his long term health and well being.

The Australian Open is three months away, and we can only hope that Sinner will be healthy and prepared to play.

Tennis fans had only one Grand Slam this calendar year, the Australian Open, with both Sinner and Alcaraz competing.

Alexander Zverev should claim the year-end ATP World No. 1 ranking. He was the best player of the year, in terms of health, fitness, and results with two Grand Slam titles. Sinner’s absence at the ATP Finals will also make the race to earn the coveted eight spots in the year-end invite-only tournament more intriguing. Only Zverev, Alcaraz, and Sinner have qualified which now means six spots are up for grabs.

It continues to be shocking that Sinner and Alcaraz, in their early and mid 20s and in the prime of their careers, are dealing with major injuries.

Sinner was virtually unbeatable in the spring hardcourt season, winning the Sunshine Double among others, on his way to the Wimbledon win. He won 44 matches and six titles, despite only playing half the year.
