James Corden calls for Prince Harry to be next England coach after expert World Cup analysis

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex’s explanation for England’s World Cup elimination at the hands of Argentina has seen James Corden jokingly call for him to be part of the coaching set-up.

While the English national team just enjoyed their most successful World Cup since 1966 after finishing third, the way in which they were knocked out by old rivals Argentina frustrated many supporters.

There is a strong school of thought that thinks head coach Thomas Tuchel cost his team a World Cup final by reverting to ultra-defensive tactics too early after Anthony Gordon had opened the scoring.

Though Prince Harry did not go quite as far as to blame Tuchel for England‘s late collapse against Argentina, he does believe it was because of the team’s mindset, and Corden was impressed.

Appearing on Corden’s After Hours show on Fox, he said: “It’s a mindset. I think what we saw was a slight shock value for the team.

“Oh, s***, we’re 1-0 up against Argentina, and then there was this immediate temptation to fall into defence.

“I don’t think it was a tactic, I don’t think that was the plan, it just happened. You can’t, for however long it was, try to defend a 1-0 lead against a team like that. You just can’t.

“So I think the mindset is the belief. If you are 1-0 up, believe that could be 2-0 up.”

Corden was impressed with that answer and the same was true of former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand.

Ferdinand asked Prince Harry to come on his podcast, believing the two had a similar view of the sport.

Meanwhile, Corden even joked that Ferdinand should take over as England manager after Tuchel’s contract expires in the summer of 2028, after the next European Championships.

Corden then claimed that Prince Harry should even form part of Ferdinand’s coaching team!

He said: “Once Thomas Tuchel steps down in two years’ time after the Euros, what about this? Manager, Rio Ferdinand. Assistant manager, Prince Harry.”

It will no doubt take England fans a while to get over their latest World Cup exit.

Though Argentina are clearly a strong team, the manner with which they lost in the final to Spain surely suggested that England could have been much more proactive towards the closing stages of the game.

Prince Harry might not be the man people turn to for expert soccer insight but it’s difficult to disagree with what he said…
