Jackson Koivun speaks for the first time after the USA win the Presidents Cup

Jackson Koivun has admitted that he is shocked by how quick his rise has been after playing his part in Team USA winning the Presidents Cup at Medinah on Sunday.

While many would have expected Brandt Snedeker’s side to still win despite trailing by three points going into the singles, few would have anticipated that Team USA would be so dominant on the final day.

The Internationals won just two of the 12 matches, while Nick Taylor and Russell Henley tied once the result was confirmed. It was Koivun who took the Americans to the brink of victory with a stunning victory against Si-woo Kim.

Kim had been the Internationals’ star performer over the first three days. And it seemed that he was likely to deliver a fourth point of the week when he took the lead against Koivun. However, the 21-year-old was able to turn the match around.

He played the 18th hole with a remarkable swagger, walking after both his drive and his approach shot. His teammates were quick to embrace him once his victory over Kim was official.

And speaking to the media after his win, Koivun admitted that he cannot quite believe how the last few months have gone.

“It’s just been such a cool learning experience. Being under Captain Snedeker and being around all these guys is so cool, and obviously to come out on top after a large deficit coming into today is just a feeling I can’t explain,” he said.

“I had some goals, but for it to come this quickly is definitely shocking, and I’m just thankful and grateful for the trust the captains put in me to put me out in three of the five matches.”

Snedeker was praised by many for deciding to pick Koivun despite the youngster not advancing beyond the first FedEx Cup playoff event. He had won the 3M Open on his third professional start, while he is likely to be a stalwart in the Ryder Cup for years to come.

Koivun stepped up to finish as the only unbeaten player across the two teams at Medinah. And he explained what he will take from the experience.

“Yeah, I think I’ll just take a lot of knowledge that I can be out here and I can compete. It’s just exciting being able to call these guys my friends, and now when I go to tournaments it’s not like, oh, there’s so and so. It’s like, I was on a team with them and we won the Presidents Cup,” he said.

Koivun’s performance will be remembered for a long time. He looked right at home in the American lineup, so it was fitting that he went on to take down the Internationals’ best player on Sunday.

It was another week that confirmed that he is a superstar in the making.
