Jack Harvey has told the IndyCar paddock he is fighting cancer, and in the same announcement he pointed at a date on the calendar: the 2027 Indianapolis 500. The 33-year-old has not publicly detailed the type of cancer or a treatment plan in anything we could verify, so this story won’t guess at either. What is confirmed is narrower and, for a driver in his position, more interesting than a diagnosis alone.

IndyCar’s own October 16 coverage says Harvey revealed his diagnosis the previous week, plans to keep working FOX’s IndyCar and INDY NXT broadcasts, and hopes to start the 111th Indianapolis 500 on May 30. That is a three-part plan: treat, keep broadcasting, and aim at one race.

At the test covered in IndyCar’s October 16 notebook, several INDY NXT cars carried stickers supporting Harvey. That is a small, cheap gesture and exactly the kind that tells you who a driver is to the people around him. Harvey is a rare crossover figure: a driver who spends race weekends in pit lane with a FOX microphone, which we covered when FOX built out its booth for the Washington, D.C. race. The people backing him see him every week, not only on a grid. That is analysis, not a statement from anyone involved, but the stickers are hard to read any other way.

Harvey’s recent racing has been built around Indianapolis rather than a full season. He drove the No. 24 INVST Chevrolet for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing in the 2026 Indy 500 after making his debut with the team in 2025. In 2025 he started 26th and finished 19th after leading three laps; IndyCar says a late-race penalty dropped him from a top-10 run. In 2026 he started 33rd, on the last row, and finished 22nd, and the series’ own recap noted that his fuel strategy looked well chosen and could have produced a better result from further up the grid.

His Indy 500 record now spans nine starts since his 2017 debut with Meyer Shank Racing, with a best finish of ninth in 2020. A one-race program is a single month and a single date, which is a very different thing to plan around than 17 rounds. That is scheduling logic, not medical commentary, and nothing in the verified material says what his doctors expect.

An Indy 500 ride is three things at once: a team, a car and money. INVST was Harvey’s primary partner at Dreyer & Reinbold in both 2025 and 2026. We have found no announced 2027 team, car or sponsor, and “hopes to race” is the accurate way to describe where this stands. The entry list takes shape over the winter, so the confirmations to watch are a team and a sponsor, and whether his FOX work stays intact alongside them.

Harvey, born in Bassingham, England, has 95 IndyCar starts with no wins or poles, three top-fives, 17 top-tens and 10 laps led. His best result is third at the 2019 Sonsio Grand Prix on the Indianapolis road course. Before moving up he won six INDY NXT races and finished second in that championship twice. A winless record on paper, but he has been a regular fixture in the field for nearly a decade, and the paddock reaction reads as respect for that.

Expect the next updates to come from Harvey himself, FOX and, eventually, a team announcement. IndyCar has a long record of closing ranks around its own when the sport is hurting, a pattern we looked at in our look back at Las Vegas 2011. We will update this story as more is confirmed, and we wish Harvey well.
