The debate over trans athletes in women’s sports continues to ripple across the WNBA, but Portland Fire head coach Alex Sarama has given his take on the heated debate.
During a media session ahead of Portland’s game against the Indiana Fever on Friday, July 31, the first-year coach stressed that his focus remains on basketball and on supporting everyone in the community.

The exchange, shared by Fox News reporter Jackson Thompson on X, began when he asked Sarama for his stance on the ongoing debate sparked by a recent comment by Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham.
While emphasizing inclusivity, Sarama kept his answer brief, saying his focus was more on coaching basketball.
“My focus as a basketball coach, to be completely honest, I don’t think I’ve ever had to think about that. I’m completely supportive of people from all communities or walks of life. So that’s my stance completely. You know, I’m supportive of everyone in the pool and the community.”
When Thompson followed up and asked point-blank whether he’d be okay with “biological males” playing in the WNBA, Sarama replied: “I think I’ve given my answer already on that question. I don’t feel like I need to go deeper there.”
Sarama’s comments came just as the debate landed right on his team’s doorstep.
The controversy has led to real-world consequences around the league. A rally supporting Cunningham was held outside a Fever road game in Seattle, and fans booed the Fever guard during that same contest at Climate Pledge Arena.
The situation escalated further when the WNBA suspended Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton for five games after she reportedly confronted two teenage fans holding signs supporting Cunningham.
The rally is part of a bigger storm that’s followed Cunningham’s recent comments about trans athletes.
Her remarks split public opinion, drawing support from figures like J.K. Rowling, Riley Gaines, and Martina Navratilova, while critics have reportedly called the comments harmful to the trans community.
The debate has also produced visible responses from around the league. Storm center Stefanie Dolson wore a shirt reading “Trans rights are human rights” before Seattle’s game against Indiana, while Cunningham later defended the teenage fans involved in the incident in Seattle and said people should be able to disagree respectfully without harassment.
