‘It’s tough’ – Travis Kelce addresses flag controversies after Kansas City win over Miami Dolphins

Travis Kelce spoke about the number of flags in the Kansas City Chiefs‘ win against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

It seems that the Kansas City Chiefs cannot escape conversations about the officiating no matter what happens in their games at times.

Following the team’s 24-10 win against the Miami Dolphins, there was a lot of chatter online about a roughing-the-passer call that went the Chiefs’ way. The numbers from the game show something else, though.

There were 18 total flags during the contest, nine each for both teams. Travis Kelce and his brother, Jason, discussed the situation on their New Heights podcast.

No player in any sport likes the referees getting in the way too much. The same is true for Kelce and the Chiefs, and their game against the Dolphins saw the number of penalties exceed the league average.

He discussed it with his brother Jason, who also put in his two cents.

“A lot of flags on both sides of the ball, for both teams,” the tight end said. “It puts a halt to the momentum that you’re trying to get. Ends drives.

“You just gotta try and hone in on those fundamentals and make sure you’re not giving the refs anything to call. That’s just how the game goes.

Jason then agreed that he felt there had been a lot of penalties in crucial moments. He revealed that he spoke to the Senior Correspondent of Analytics, who gave him the numbers.

“14 touchdowns have been erased by penalties so far this season, the fourth most through three weeks since the year 2000,” Jason shared. “Seven alone on Sunday, which is the eighth-highest individual week out of 450 weeks since 2000.

“There have been 16 penalty plays that have swung the win percentage by at least 10%. The highest total through three weeks in the year 2000.”

The Chiefs man then responded, saying, “It’s tough, man. Everybody’s trying to do their job. At the same time, I’m not going to lie, I had one, and you’re just kinda sitting there, you’re playing football, and you see some laundry on the field, and you’re just like, ‘Man, what could that have been?'”

It is evident that the flags are bothering Kelce and the Chiefs just as much as they are every other team. The NFL has a duty to keep the game fair, but no one wants to see the referees get too involved, either.
