Vincent Kompany admits Bayern Munich only have themselves to blame for their back-to-back draws against Augsburg and Viking, with indefensible errors costing them.
Having played out a 2-2 draw against Augsburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday, Bayern were again left to settle for a share of the spoils in the Champions League on Tuesday.
They shared six goals equally with Norwegian champions Viking, dropping points in a league-phase match for just the second time in their last 10 such outings (W8 L1).
Bayern fell behind after one minute and 11 seconds through Gianni Stensness’ header. That goal was the fourth-fastest they have ever conceded in the Champions League, having also conceded the earliest goal in Bundesliga history on Saturday, after a mere eight seconds.
Peter Christiansen doubled Viking’s advantage, and though Harry Kane’s brace and a Luis Diaz strike put Bayern in front, they conceded a last-minute equaliser to Herman Haugen, after Michael Olise was sent off for two bookable offences.
Olise’s second caution came when he needlessly pulled back Henrik Heggheim deep inside Viking territory, leaving Kompany to rue a series of individual errors from his players.
“It’s our own fault. We were very dominant, like we were at the weekend,” the Bayern boss told the club’s website.
“There are certainly things where you can say the substance of our performance isn’t that bad, but we’re just making lapses in concentration and aren’t smart enough in these moments.
“Against Augsburg we conceded after eight seconds, today after one minute. In that situation, we maybe didn’t need to play it out from the corner and could’ve looked for the longer option. There was a bit of overconfidence there.
“At the moment, it feels like every chance for the opponents leads to a goal. That’s no excuse, though, because we’re causing these situations ourselves. The sending-off was obviously stupid, and we’ve spoken about it quite clearly.
“However, it’s important to me that I don’t see a lack of energy in the team. The players are working hard, and mentally they’re always at it, too.
“Nevertheless, things like this shouldn’t happen. It makes it difficult to win matches, even when you’re clearly superior and don’t play that badly throughout the whole game.
“But because of these isolated situations, which we’re bringing about ourselves, it obviously turns out differently.”

Bayern have never won an away match in the Champions League or European Cup after trailing by multiple goals, with Tuesday’s game representing the 38th time they have trailed by two or more goals on the road in the competition (D3 L35).
Viking are just the second Norwegian team to score three times against a German side in the Champions League, after Rosenborg versus Borussia Dortmund in 1999 (3-0).
Captain Joshua Kimmich echoed Kompany’s sentiment in his own post-match assessment, saying: “We’re making too many mistakes.
“Our play isn’t bad. We have to acknowledge that something is amiss at the moment, and that’s down to the fact we’re making too many individual errors.
“It’s not down to effort. We’re lagging a bit behind now because of the points we’ve dropped, which we need to make up, but it’s still too early to say much about it. Nevertheless, we have to admit that we’re a bit away from where we want to be.”
Bayern return to Bundesliga action against RB Leipzig on Saturday, before taking on 2025-26 runners-up Arsenal in their next Champions League match on October 20.
