“It’s one game” – Carrick defends Manchester United progress despite total lack of attacking spark

Manchester United were beaten badly by Hull City this afternoon, and Michael Carrick has had to calm things post game.

There were lots of positive feelings around Manchester United at the start of this season after they finished the previous campaign in good form.

The bubble was burst within 45 minutes when newly promoted Hull scored twice to condemn the Red Devils to defeat.

After the game, Michael Carrick spoke to the media and tried to calm things, knowing that it only takes one or two bad results to bring crisis to Old Trafford.

“It’s one game. It’s the first game of the season so it’s disappointing enough and it hurts, of course it does,” the manager said in quotes picked up by the club’s official website.

“But it’s one game, it doesn’t change the whole course of the direction the team or the football club is going in. We’ll stay calm, stay in the bubble and focus on next week.”

Dull United lack energy and cutting edge

United conceded two goals though pretty hesitant defending, but what was really notable was their total lack of attacking spark. Even chasing the game desperately they weren’t generating any chances of note. Carrick was asked about this too:

“We had moments, we had opportunities, we just didn’t have that spark to then put the chances away or create any more. Listen, we’re bitterly disappointed with the result today but it won’t knock us.”

Most teams in the Premier League haven’t even played their first game of the season yet, and United are already in the spotlight. Such is life on the volcano.
