It's Officially The End Of An Era For Netflix's Wednesday

· · 3 min read

The hotly anticipated third season of Wednesday has gotten an update that confirms the show is about to undergo a major change. Since Wednesday debuted in 2022, the series has become a flagship entry for Netflix, with season 1 landing several viral moments that spread the show’s popularity far and wide, and season 2 bringing back a loyal chunk of the fanbase.

The series, which stars Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, is a twist on the popular Addams Family stories from comics and earlier films, with the focus shifting to explore the life of the Addams daughter during her time at a unique school for young people who possess unusual abilities, and of course the occasional superpower.

With Tim Burton behind the camera, Wednesday has a distinct style, with Nevermore Academy established as the primary setting of the series, and serving as a backdrop on Wednesday’s dark investigations. However, it seems as though season 3 is breaking tradition and taking the cast to a brand-new location.

Wednesday Season 3 Is Leaving Nevermore For The First Time Since The Series Began

While Wednesday season 1 opened with a brief look at the earlier years of Wednesday Addams’ life, and her brief time in a school prior to enrolling at Nevermore Academy, the rest of the show has been set exclusively in and around the school. Even when other members of the Addams clan have popped up in the series, they have always come to Nevermore.

But according to the official Wednesday Instagram account, season 3 will see Wednesday venture abroad as she appears in a picture where the Eiffel Tower can be seen in the background. The picture is accompanied by a caption that reads “From Paris, with dread.” before that line is repeated again in French.

Evidently, Wednesday appears to have left the familiar surroundings of Nevermore behind, and the next season will see her explore a new part of the world, likely in pursuit of some perilous mystery. However, this image raises larger questions about the future of the show, and what could be next for young Wednesday as the series evolves.

Will Wednesday Be Leaving Nevermore Behind For Good?

Wednesday was 15 when season 1 began, and over the course of the season, the character had their 16th birthday. Presumably, season 2 moved things along at least a year, which would make Wednesday 17, and the upcoming season would see the young Addams turn 18 or a little older. If this is the case, it makes sense for Wednesday to move on with her life, and age out of the school system.

If this is the case, and that is indeed why Wednesday is in Paris instead of Nevermore, it could suggest that she will be moving on from Nevermore Academy for good. This makes a lot of sense for the character as an individual, but it does create a new challenge in adapting the story, and positioning the character for future stories. Wednesday may settle down somewhere, or perhaps return home to her family, but with the show being so focused on her story independent of the other unusual Addams’ family members, it makes sense to keep her separate.

Nevermore was an excellent tool to bring Wednesday into a solo adventure and allow her to become the focus of her own narrative, and likewise, Wednesday taking time to travel the world and investigate mysteries that take her down diverse roads could continue this narrative and help to build her story without the overwhelming presence of the other Addams’.

Of course, all of that is speculation, and the show could simply be taking a brief stint in a new setting before Wednesday returns to Nevermore to finish out the school year and continue with her supernatural education. Whatever the case, Wednesday season 3 is already shaping up to look very different to everything that came before.
