It's been a busy offseason for Commanders' new coordinators

The last two weeks of the Washington Commanders‘ workouts have been about installation.

With the Commanders firing both their offensive and defensive coordinators from the 2025 season, Dan Quinn needed to hire replacements for Joe Whitt Jr. and Kliff Kingsbury. Following his searches and interviews, Daronte Jones and David Blough were Quinn’s choices for successors.

Consequently, Blough and Jones had their work cut out for them over the last few months. They needed to go through their philosophies and situations Xs and Os with their position coaches. Following that, Blough and Jones led the assistants in instructing the players on the very basics of their offensive and defensive systems.

Then the two new coordinators had to work on installing as much of the offensive and defensive schemes as they could in the last Organized Team Activities (OTAs) and this past week’s mandatory minicamp. Quinn declared this week that the majority of the installation was completed with the players.

When the Commanders’ annual training camp begins in July, both Blough and Jones will be busy again, working hard to install the remaining parts of their systems and schemes. For the offense, will Blough be utilizing more of a two-tight-end, two-receiver set? Regarding the defense, how different will Jones’ approach be from that of Joe Whitt? How much of the system of Brian Flores (Vikings DC) will Jones bring with him to the Commanders? How much will the huge personnel alteration of the defense by GM Adam Peters help Jones to implement the system he desires to run?

The fan base and local media have craved Peters landing a free-agent WR2 in the offseason. The Commanders have not. They did draft Clemson receiver Antonio Williams in the third round at No. 71 overall. But the Commanders, with Blough leading the offense, may, in fact, shift to more two-receiver and two-tight-end sets. Thus, the tight end room could play a much more significant role than many are anticipating. Chig Okonkwo signed in free agency, Ben Sinnott a 2024 draft pick could have significant roles. The extra tight end provides you with a bigger blocker than a third receiver.

And now we wait… a slow month until training camp begins.
