Manuel Neuer hinted he could be playing his final season, claiming “it certainly looks like I’m going to retire”.
The 40-year-old signed a one-year contract extension with Bayern Munich back in May, keeping him at the club for the 2026-27 campaign.
He came out of international retirement during the summer to represent Germany at the World Cup, playing in all of four matches as they were knocked out in the last 32 on penalties by Paraguay.
Neuer will play his 16th season with Bayern in the upcoming campaign, having already lifted 24 major honours with the club during that time.
But it looks like this could be the last in Neuer’s glittering career.
“I don’t play matches thinking, ‘This is my last game’ – regardless of whether it may be my final appearance at one stadium or another. But it certainly looks like I’m going to retire,” he told BILD.
“I probably would have retired in 85% of cases [this summer], but with this squad, the staff, and the coaching team, it’s simply a joy.

“We always have the chance to compete for every title. Currently, we’re right at the top with this team.
“That’s why this squad, the team, and the structure we have at the club are part of the 15% that made me say. I definitely have to carry on.
“It’s just so much fun. I’m doing this for myself because I know I’m still capable of helping the team whenever I’m needed.”
Neuer has won a record-equalling 13 Bundesliga titles – pulling level with Thomas Muller – and has made 545 appearances for Bayern since joining from Schalke in 2011.
Bayern have won the Bundesliga title in each of the last two seasons, winning it on April 19 in 2025-26 as they stormed to the trophy.
Last season, Bayern won the double, also claiming their first DFB-Pokal since 2020, but they were knocked out of the Champions League in the semi-final by eventual winner Paris Saint-Germain.
