After being without their star cornerback for two straight weeks, Christian Gonzalez will once again suit up for the New England Patriots and play in Sunday’s matchup against the New York Jets.
“I’m ready to go,” Gonzalez told reporters on Wednesday.
The cornerback suffered a shoulder injury against the Jacksonville Jaguars during a tackle, but he ultimately returned to the game. However, he explained that in the moment, it was all adrenaline, but afterwards, the severity began to sink in.
“Adrenaline covers a lot of things in this sport,” Gonzalez said. “That time, I felt good. Things happen. It is what it is and I’m ready for this week.”
Gonzalez, who signed a new extension with the Patriots before the season opener, making him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, has been itching to return to the field, especially as the cornerback room has been plagued with injuries. Last week, the team had four sidelined, including Gonzalez and fellow starter Carlton Davis, with Charles Woods, Kindle Vildor, and Marcus Jones being the only healthy cornerbacks on the roster.
“I’ve been talking to my mom and friends. I’ve been itching, kind of going a little crazy when I’m not able to play,” Gonzalez explained. “It’s hard. You put in work with all these guys and you don’t get to be out there with them. I’m good now. Ready for Sunday. That’s what I’m looking forward to.”Gonzalez was listed on the injury report on Wednesday as a limited participant, and then on Thursday as full. So when Friday came, and it was time for game designations, he wasn’t given one. And it’s a good time to get him back, as Gonzalez will have his hands full with Jets star receiver Garrett Wilson.
