Is Luka Dončić The Best Scorer Ever?

Some folks think scoring is all about speed, but a new Lakers rookie says that is not how the game works. Cameron Carr, the 6-foot-5 wing from Baylor, watched Luka Dončić light up the court and decided the Slovenian is the real deal. Carr told a reporter on Wednesday that he has known since college that Dončić moves in slow motion, yet it just works for him. This young player is not just watching; he is soaking up every bit of wisdom from the best scorer in the NBA.

Carr averaged 18.9 points in his only year at Baylor, so he knows what it takes to put the ball in the hoop. He admitted he is in awe of how Dončić plays at his own pace, never getting sped up by defenders. According to the New York Post, Carr said, “I don’t know how it works, but it works. He plays at his own pace; he doesn’t get sped up. It’s impossible to take the ball from him — I don’t know how it works.” That is a bold statement from a guy who has only played two minutes in the league, but he sees something special in Dončić.

The Mind Game Changes Everything

It is not just the points that impress Carr; it is the way Dončić thinks during the game. The rookie believes that being around such a sharp mind helps everyone on the team improve. Carr noted that watching how Dončić processes the game sharpens his own play and that of those around him. He even joked that he asks Dončić every game if he meant to bank in a three-pointer, and the star always says he did it on purpose. That kind of confidence is hard to fake when you are facing double-teams all night.

Dončić is currently averaging a league-high 38.3 points per game, along with 8.1 assists and eight rebounds. His scoring pace is so high that if he keeps it up, he would break Wilt Chamberlain’s all-time record for points per minute set back in 1961. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra admitted after a recent win that Dončić “can make plays, every play in the book that you need to make as a point-of-attack guy. You have to pick him up 30 feet. He can make every pass in the book. He can read your defense. He understands what we’re trying to do. He positions guys in the right spots, and he makes the right play over and over and over. That’s what the greats do.”

The Lakers are winning because they let their star do what he does best, and the rest of the team is learning to follow his lead.

A New Standard for the League

Carr does not think Dončić even realizes how much impact he has on younger players like himself. He said he is just there every day, watching and learning from a legend. The rookie called Dončić the best scorer in the NBA and said that is big-time. With Dončić averaging 15 points in the first quarter and 22.9 in the first half, the offense is moving faster than anyone expected. The Lakers are looking unstoppable when the ball moves and the star is in control.
