Iraola hopeful Frimpong avoided injury in defeat to Leeds

Andoni Iraola is hopeful Jeremie Frimpong has not suffered an injury after asking to be substituted during Liverpool’s pre-season defeat to Leeds United.

Liverpool were 2-0 up at half-time in Chicago but shipped four second-half goals to finish their tour of the United States with a 4-2 defeat.

Frimpong, who had assisted Florian Wirtz’s earlier goal, was taken off in the 77th minute, potentially giving Iraola a defensive headache.

Joe Gomez is already set to miss the start of the season after suffering a muscle issue in Liverpool’s first pre-season friendly, while Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni remain sidelined as they continue their recoveries.

However, Iraola is confident Frimpong, who missed large chunks of his debut Premier League season through injury, will not be forced to the sidelines.

“Jeremie asked for the sub, but I don’t think it’s an injury,” Iraola told Liverpool ⁠media after ​the game.

“It was just some overload, and I hope he’s not injured in that way. I don’t think we’ve lost anyone.”

Liverpool put in a strong performance in the first half, but struggled to match Leeds’ pressure after the break, with set-pieces once again proving a problem.

The Whites finished the game with 15 shots (seven on target) worth 2.2 expected goals (xG), while Liverpool racked up just nine efforts worth 1.1 xG.

“I think we learn a lot of things. Obviously, it’s not the result you want, but I think [it was] probably the most useful friendly we played – in a positive way in the first half and in a negative way in the second half,” Iraola added.

“I think we’ve learned a lot, and I think we can take good conclusions and solve some things.”

Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Ryan Gravenberch all made their first appearances of pre-season, and Iraola was pleased with how they settled back in.

“I think they did really well,” he said of the trio. “They played their first 45 minutes.

“Obviously, Florian and Alex, because they were playing in the first half, they had an easier game or a better game. Ryan, it was costly for him.”
