Iowa vs Michigan Prediction: Will Anyone Score?

Iowa (3-0) is usually the Greatest Slow on Turf with a grinding attack that lives on field position and defense, but the offense exploded in wins over Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa … and went full Iowa in a 16-13 win over Iowa State.

Michigan‘s (3-0) finally put up a big 52-point day last week against UTEP, but the offense should be in for a grind this week in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

• Michigan has owned the series with a 40-15-4 lead, including four straight wins going back to 2019.

• The Wolverines go to Minnesota next week in the battle for the Little Brown Jug. It’s the only road trip on the schedule until Halloween.

• Iowa has to deal with Ohio State next week and then road trips to Washington and Minnesota.

The Iowa offense isn’t totally opening it up, and it’s not going to bomb away in this, but it showed that it has the ability to open up the passing game a bit. Hank Brown has hit 73% of his throws for 473 yards and three touchdowns with no picks, and he can run a little bit.

In this, the goal will be to get the offensive line going right away. Run the ball, and then rely on the No. 1 defense in college football to hold up against a Michigan offense that still has to prove it can produce against someone decent.

Cranking up the offense against Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa like Iowa did isn’t anything to get fired up about. And yes, the Hawkeye defense is the statistical best in the nation, but again, the schedule hasn’t been great.

Michigan will have to be patient. Quarterback Bryce Underwood can’t get greedy. He’ll have to take a shot to move the chains when he can, and rely on the amazing defense to hold its own.

Oklahoma‘s offense couldn’t go anywhere against the Wolverine linebackers and a run defense that has yet to allow a rushing score. Nothing should change here.

Here’s the problem with the sputtering Michigan offense – it’s not controlling the clock in any way, and against Iowa, that could be deadly.

The Hawkeyes haven’t been dominating the time of possession battle so far, partly because it hasn’t needed to. It’ll control the clock, slow things down, get a great performance out of the defense, and …

The Michigan defense will be just a bit better, and Underwood will come up with the one scoring drive that matters in the third.
