Instant analysis of Eagles' 27-10 loss to Commanders in Week 8

The Philadelphia Eagles entered Sunday night’s matchup against the Washington Commanders needing a performance that could restore confidence in a struggling team. Instead, a 27-10 defeat exposed many of the same problems that have defined their six-game losing streak.

Philadelphia led 10-0 in the opening quarter but failed to score again, allowing Washington to control the final three quarters and turn another nationally televised matchup into a lopsided defeat. The Eagles finished with 268 total yards, committed two turnovers, and struggled to protect Tanner McKee consistently.

The loss dropped Philadelphia to 2-6 and raised further questions about whether the team’s offensive personnel, execution, and overall approach can produce a meaningful turnaround.

Offensive limitations remain impossible to ignore

McKee completed 23 of 34 passes for 212 yards, but the final numbers do not fully capture the struggles of Philadelphia’s passing game. Washington recorded five sacks and regularly disrupted the quarterback’s timing, leaving the Eagles unable to capitalize on manageable situations.

The offensive line struggled with pressure throughout the night, and penalties made matters worse. A costly strip-sack ended a promising third-quarter possession, while an illegal formation penalty later erased a successful fourth-quarter field goal.

Philadelphia also failed to establish a physical rushing attack. Saquon Barkley carried 13 times for 30 yards, while Elijah Mitchell added 34 yards on 11 attempts. The Eagles averaged just 3.1 yards per carry, repeatedly forcing McKee into situations that favored Washington’s defense.

Defense creates early opportunity but cannot sustain momentum

The Eagles’ best defensive moment came when Andrew Mukuba forced a fumble that Zack Baun recovered, creating the short field for Barkley’s touchdown. Philadelphia also received sacks from Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith Jr., while Jeremiah Trotter Jr. finished with 10 tackles.

However, Washington regrouped after its difficult start. Jayden Daniels threw for 217 yards and a touchdown, while the Commanders rushed for 135 yards and averaged 5.2 yards per carry.

Philadelphia struggled to win early downs consistently and keep Washington from controlling possession. The Commanders’ 89-yard touchdown drive in the second quarter demonstrated the defense’s inability to sustain the momentum created by its early takeaway.

Pressure increases on Nick Sirianni

The Eagles’ problems extend beyond a single quarterback or position group. Philadelphia has now lost six consecutive games, including back-to-back prime-time defeats to division opponents, and the offense continues to struggle with execution and situational awareness.

The upcoming matchup against the New York Giants presents another opportunity to reverse the slide, but the team must first address the mistakes that have repeatedly undermined otherwise competitive stretches.

The Eagles remain mathematically alive in the NFC East, yet their recent performance provides little reason to assume a turnaround is imminent. With a bye approaching, Sirianni and his staff face difficult questions about what must change before the remainder of the season.
