Insecurity: State police not solution – Lawyer Idam

Activist lawyer, Maduabuchi Idam, on Thursday declared that State police is not the solution to insecurity bedeviling Nigeria.

Idam explained that placing police structures under the control of state governors could pose serious risks to the opposition, critics, and perceived political enemies.

In a statement he signed, Idam said: “State policing is neither the desired solution nor a sustainable answer to Nigeria’s security challenges, given the prevailing mindset of much of the country’s political class, which is often characterized by power struggles and the pursuit of personal gain.

“Placing police structures under the control of state governors could pose serious risks to the rights of opposition figures, critics, and perceived political enemies, while diverting attention from genuine security concerns.”

The activist lawyer insisted that state police in the hands of state governor poses a great risk to free, fair, and credible elections.

“With state governors exercising direct control over law enforcement, the prospects for free, fair, and credible elections could be significantly undermined.

“President must recognize that not every policy proposal should be adopted or enacted into law. Some ideas are best left as subjects of public debate rather than implementation.

“In my view, state policing has the potential to create even greater security challenges than those Nigeria currently faces,” he added.
