IndyCar Officiating explains Road America incidents with Rahal, Power and Newgarden

Five days after IndyCar’s Grand Prix at Road America, IndyCar Officiating has released its post-event report for the race.

The most notable incident in the race occurred on the final lap, when Will Power made contact with Graham Rahal, spinning Rahal’s No. 15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda into the Turn 12 wall, resulting in Rahal finishing 23rd while Power snuck onto the podium at third.

Race control dinged Rahal for blocking, although no penalty was given since he didn’t cross the finish line. When describing the incident in its post-race report, IndyCar Officiating said, “The Stewards reviewed the video evidence and found Car 15 moved in reaction to the pursuing car but determined no further penalty was warranted.”

Another penalty was enforced on the final lap when Josef Newgarden, who was trying to pass Santino Ferrucci, made contact with Nolan Siegel, who was ahead of Ferrucci. The contact moved Siegel to the back of the cars still on track. Despite crossing the finish line in ninth, Newgarden was given a 30-second time penalty, since he couldn’t serve a drive-through penalty with the race being over. Newgarden finished 22nd, one spot below Siegel.

Road America is the second race of IndyCar Officiating’s post-race reports. IndyCar Officiating, which is in its first year of existence with the goal of creating independence from IndyCar and Penske Entertainment, is releasing the reports for “increased consistency and clarity,” according to managing director of officiating Scot Elkins.

The public will continue to get further explanation of incidents, like the two that happened on the last lap at Road America.
