The NTT IndyCar series had a wild weekend, to say the least. They took on the Milwaukee Mile for a doubleheader weekend, but things took a fast left turn.
In the middle of Saturday’s race, rain in the area picked up. The track struggled to keep dry, and the continuation was pushed into Sunday morning. However, the time was changed once again, and the race continued after the first feature race on Sunday.
It was a big weekend for Arrow McLaren, as their star driver, Pato O’Ward secured two victories this weekend. Not only did he win both races, he became the first driver to win two races in one day since Rick Mears in 1981.
McLaren secured a double podium in the second (technically the first race on Sunday) race, with Scott McLaughlin of Team Penske and Christian Lundgaard rounding out the top three. This was Lundgaard’s first career podium on an oval track.
The continuation of Saturday’s race came with heavy championship implications. Since Alex Palou beat out Kyle Kirkwood in the first race, he needed to finish above him in the continuation race to secure his fifth championship. He did just that, finishing 10th, whereas Kirkwood finished 15th. The championship has been won, and Palou is now a five-time Indycar champion.
It was also a big day for David Malukas and Rinus Veekay, who closed out the top three. Malukas earned his eighth top-five finish of the season, and 12th top-10 finish of the season. Veekay earned his fourth top-five finish this year and his eighth top-10 finish this year.
To close out the season, IndyCar takes on Laguna Seca in Monterey, CA. This is the final race of the season. With the championship over, it’s time for drivers to give their all one more time.
