No surprise, but Indianapolis Colts’ running back Jonathan Taylor has been listed among the most explosive players in the NFL over the last five seasons by Pro Football Focus.
With explosive plays becoming more prevalent over the years, PFF’s Bradley Locker identified which players have been the most effective at generating those chunk plays. Coming in at No. 5 was Taylor.
“Over his last five seasons, Taylor has netted 161 explosive rushes and 20 such catches,” Locker wrote.
An explosive run is categorized as a rush of 10-plus yards, while an explosive pass is a reception of 15 or more yards.
Locker continued, “Part of why Taylor has helped churn out such an abundance of yardage is his work slipping tackles. Since 2021, Taylor has forced 238 missed tackles, which places fourth at his position. That included a career-high 67 attempts eluded in 2025, which ranked third.”
This elusiveness and big play ability have allowed Taylor to be one of the most productive backs in football. In 2024, he rushed for 1,431 yards, followed by 1,585 yards in 2025.
While much of the attention on the Colts‘ offense goes to Daniel Jones and the passing game, Taylor’s presence is vital to the overall success of the offense.
Having a strong run game to lean on keeps this unit ahead of the sticks and out of predictable passing situations, helping to open up the playbook for Shane Steichen and opportunities in the passing game for Jones.
Taylor is about to enter the final year of his current deal.
