In the wake of another World Cup

Mexico and South Africa are kicking off another World Cup. Is this 2010 all over again? It perhaps is. Spain are reigning European Champions and one of the biggest favourites to win the title, just like in 2010. When it comes to parallels between different football timelines, it may well be my favourite thing about this sport.

2010 had a first-time host – South Africa. 2026 has Canada. As mentioned already, both editions have the same opening fixture. Jose Mourinho was hired as Real Madrid coach before the 2010 World Cup. It has happened again in 2026. Fabio Cannavaro was at the 2010 World Cup as the captain of the reigning Champions Italy. He is here in 2026 as well. While Italy is nowhere to be seen, Cannavaro is now the head coach of Uzbekistan.

Very few players from the 2010 World Cup have survived in the game long enough to arrive at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Nicolas Otamendi and Guillermo Ochoa come to mind.
