Following their opening victory over Senegal (3-1) to kick off their World Cup campaign, France defeated Iraq (3-0) this time round, in a match they controlled from start to finish, albeit one that was interrupted by a two-hour break due to appalling weather conditions.

A valuable win for Les Bleus, secured thanks to a brace from Kylian Mbappé (27) and a goal from Ousmane Dembélé (29), which ensures they have qualified for the round of 16 of the tournament.

Speaking on beIN Sports, France manager Didier Deschamps said he was “pleased” with his players’ performance, whilst pointing out that their third group stage match, against Norway on Friday, is likely to be decisive in determining their position in the group.

“The first half was good, but perhaps I’m being too hard on my players. We came back strongly, secured the win and I’m happy tonight,” the French manager said. “But I’m convinced that the third match will once again be decisive for top spot.”

This suggests that the fixture against the Scandinavians – who, should they beat Senegal, would also have six points – will be anything but a friendly affair. Les Bleus’ future in the competition could well hinge on it.
