Now with the Buccaneers, Mayfield looks extra motivated to put up a stellar showing against his former teammates for the first time. That motivation, alongside his skills, threatens Cleveland radio hosts Ken Carman and Anthony Lima ahead of the game.

The Browns drafted Mayfield with the first overall pick in the 2018 draft. During his four seasons with the Browns, Mayfield set rookie records, registered a sophomore slump, took the Browns to the playoffs, won a road playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and then struggled massively playing through a number of injuries.

It was an inconsistent tenure, one that didn’t convince the Browns to commit to Mayfield in the long term. Without considering the fact that Mayfield was clearly their most successful quarterback in recent memory, the Browns traded for Deshaun Watson. Watson’s trade cost an enormous amount of assets while also giving Watson a record-breaking amount of guaranteed money.

However, Watson’s tenure so far has been a less-than-impressive decision for the franchise. As a result of his underwhelming showing for the Browns since then, pundits think Sunday’s game could mark his last start for the franchise if he plays poorly again.

Browns head coach Todd Monken was the franchise’s offensive coordinator in 2019 when Mayfield’s performance dipped following a promising rookie season. He threw 22 touchdown passes and 21 interceptions in a 6-10 season.

Mayfield already faced the Browns and lost in 2022 during an unsettling season with the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers eventually released him that season and he joined the Buccaneers in 2023.

Since then, he has grown to become a franchise QB in Tampa Bay, making two Pro Bowls and leading the Bucs to a pair of NFC South titles. As a reward for his contributions, he got a $165 million, three-year contract extension from the organization last week.

Meanwhile, Mayfield is renowned for keeping a list of doubters and has admitted he has spotted Sunday’s game against the Browns since the schedule got out. The tie marks the Buccaneers’ home opener, and Mayfield would like to move past a Week 1 game that saw the QB lose three fumbles in a 33-27 loss against the Bengals.
