If Wimbledon wants to give Serena the last WTA singles wildcard, what’s the holdup

The Wimbledon wildcard mystery continues to unfold with Serena Williams as the rumored recipient of the last wildcard.

Wimbledon continues to keep the status of that wildcard as “to be announced.”

What could possibly be the holdup? Wimbledon ticket sales will be in even greater demand if Serena makes her singles return at the All England Club.

This could be more about Serena than Wimbledon

Some suspect that Serena is holding up the decision.

She played two doubles tennis matches in her return, winning one. That is hardly a sample size to determine anything about her ability to compete in a two week tournament, in singles or doubles, for that matter.

Serena is the ultimate competitor and is not looking to lose in the first round in her first singles match in nearly four years. She admitted recently that she would need more training to be competitive in singles. Is she trying to fast track that training?

There is still time but not much

Qualifying rounds begin on June 22 and conclude on June 25.

She is currently practicing at Wimbledon.

A decision will be made by midweek. At this point, my suspicion is that if offered the singles wildcard, she will not take it.

Serena could be working her way into hardcourt singles matches with a US Open wildcard in her sights.

In the meantime, we know that she is playing Wimbledon doubles with Venus. Venus was scheduled to play Bad Homburg doubles with Alexandra Eala. The duo have withdrawn because Eala is still in singles contention at Berlin, playing in Saturday’s semifinal against Linda Noskova. This means Venus can get to Wimbledon early for the two to practice together.
