LeBron James didn’t go the traditional agent route in his NBA career, and he recently explained his decision and how it worked out for him.
At 16 years of age, LeBron James was already one of the most popular athletes in the United States. It’s like everyone at that time knew he was destined for greatness.
Coming into the NBA with that type of hype, James needed to ensure he made all the right decisions so he could make the most of his gifts. However, he made a decision that surprised many.
From the beginning, James skipped getting a traditional agent, and instead involved his closest friends to represent him. This paid off massively for him, and he recently explained his thought process.
LeBron James says he chose his friends to represent him to keep his ventures authentic to himself
Coming up alongside LeBron, Rich Paul has become one of basketball’s most powerful agents. Maverick Carter, who is James’ partner in many of his off-court ventures, has helped him build his massive net worth.
Both these choices from James were criticised often in his younger days. In a recent discussion, the King explained why he was always confident in his friends and his decision, though.
“When it comes to Randy, Mav and Rich they’re not letting anything that’s not authentic to what I’ve built and what we’ve built to even get close to even infiltrating anything that we’ve done,” James said.
“I took a chance. I was a second year guy in the NBA, no college education, I had a high school and then my street smarts and my book smarts from my OGs growing up.
“One of my greatest gifts is seeing the good in people even before they even know that they can accomplish those things and I saw that right away with Rich and Randy and Mav.
“And I knew there was gonna be a lot of things that was gonna be said about us. I wasn’t doing it the traditional way of, ‘have an agent and let the agent kinda control everything and you just go play basketball’.
“I wasn’t playing the game by the same rules of the old regime and that’s just how I felt. I felt confident in my guys, and I feel confident in what I was bringing to the table.”
It’s rare for a player of James’ stature to do things so differently, but it has paid off for him. Many fans consider him the basketball GOAT, and he’s a billionaire. Things couldn’t have worked out much better.
