New York Yankees sportscaster Michael Kay faced a wild trade proposal involving captain Aaron Judge and Chicago Cubs NL MVP favorite Pete Crow-Armstrong.

On Thursday’s Michael Kay Show, a caller named Tony from Dobbs Ferry suggested a hypothetical trade sending Judge to the Cubs for PCA, shortstop Nico Hoerner, and Japanese ace Shota Imanaga. Kay respectfully declined the hypothetical trade for obvious reasons.

“First of all, I don’t think that the Cubs would offer that for Judge,” Kay said. “I mean, you have the guy who’s going to win the National League MVP. Nico Hoerner is a beast, and Imanaga is a pretty good pitcher. So I don’t think that they would offer that… I would have to say I would have to respectfully decline. I cannot trade the face of my franchise. I can’t, even if the deal makes total sense. I absolutely cannot do it… Sometimes things are bigger than, you know, what makes sense on a chart. Things are bigger. I can’t trade Aaron Judge. I can’t have my fan base revolt.”

The caller added that the trade is meant to free up payroll tied to Judge’s nine-year, $360 million contract, allowing the Yankees to go after Tarik Skubal in free agency. However, Kay still declined.

“But I don’t need starting pitching,” Kay continued. “Skubal is terrific. He’s a great pitcher who’s also had three elbow surgeries. He’s terrific, two Cy Young Awards, I love him, but I don’t need him. That’s not what the Yankees need. It should be good enough to have Cam Schlittler up top, and Cole and Fried and Rodón. They don’t need another starting pitcher.”

Kay added that trading Judge out of New York wouldn’t earn the franchise any favor with fans. Moreover, even from Chicago’s side, the deal makes “no sense” because they’ll be trading for a soon-to-be 35-year-old outfielder.

Yankees Get Good News on Aaron Judge’s Rehab

Aaron Judge ended up missing the entire postseason after struggling with a calf strain late in the regular season. The Yankees won their Wild Card series against the Boston Red Sox, but were swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS. There was a chance Judge could feature in the ALCS in limited capacity had the Yankees gone through.

In the latest Yankees’ injury report, the club expects the captain to be ready for 2027 Spring Training. The report said the Yankees outfielder has a moderate-grade strain of the soleus muscle in his right calf. Moreover, he is scheduled to visit Dr. Gregory Pearl for his rib injury he sustained early in the season.

This is an encouraging update for the Yankees, who were unsure how to use Judge in the postseason despite the injury. While that never came to pass, opinions were divided on whether the Yankees would play Judge despite the injury, given the severity of his calf strain.
