The Hurricanes news: Rod Brind'Amour gets realCarolina Hurricanes raised their 2026 Stanley Cup banner to the rafters of Lenovo Center on Tuesday evening before their first regular-season matchup of the new season against the Florida Panthers, who had won back-to-back championships in 2024 and 2025.

While it wasn’t a championship game, the Panthers got the last laugh at Carolina’s expense. Gustav Forsling scored the only goal of the game with just seconds remaining in overtime, ending what had been a scoreless battle and giving Florida a 1-0 victory along with the extra point in the standings.

Goaltender Brandon Bussi, who was sharp throughout the game, didn’t see Forsling’s shot until it was already past him. According to head coach Rod Brind’Amour, the one mistake Bussi made on the night was one he’d want a mulligan on, but he also pointed out that Bussi was the reason the Hurricanes earned a point in the standings.

“He’s going to want that one back, but he’s the reason we even got the point,” Brind’Amour said of Bussi via Ryan Henkel on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Bussi replaced now-former Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final earlier this spring, and later led Carolina to three straight wins, winning the club’s first title in 20 years. After Andersen departed to join the Edmonton Oilers, Bussi officially became the leading man on Carolina’s goaltending depth chart.

Bussi finished the game with 19 saves on 20 shots, while his Panthers counterpart, Jacob Markstrom, who was traded back to the club that originally drafted him, earned the shutout with 15 saves.
