The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is the second prequel in The Hunger Games franchise and is set during the Second Quarter Quell. The film will feature new cast members alongside returning characters from the original trilogy, though as younger versions of themselves.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is based on Suzanne Collins‘ fifth book in The Hunger Games franchise, Sunrise on the Reaping, and follows Haymitch Abernathy’s experience in the Games before he becomes a victor. His Hunger Games take place during the 50th annual event, a Quarter Quell, when special rules make the Games different. In this case, each District must send twice as many tributes. Francis Lawrence, who previously directed several Hunger Games movies, returns for the upcoming film adaptation, which stars Joseph Zada as Haymitch.
It’s been previously reported that some of the original cast members will make an appearance. The book ends after the events of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, when Haymitch speaks to Katniss and Peeta. During an interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, former Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence confirms that she will reprise her role as Katniss Everdeen and that she isn’t the only one returning. Two of her co-stars, Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson, will also appear in the film. This is what she has to say:
“Oh my! Unbelievable. It was so crazy, because it was the same crew. It was the same camera guys, the same AD who I’ve worked with a million times too, because I love him. Josh and Woody. It was emotional. Josh and I didn’t walk to the bathroom without our arms around each other. It was so beautiful. And Woody obviously came through the window of my hotel room, uninvited, because it wouldn’t be the same if he listened to boundaries and used a door.”

Your answers point to the iconic universe your values, your instincts, and your particular way of seeing the world were built for. This is where you would find your people — and your purpose.
You believe in the cause — in the idea that freedom is worth fighting for even when the odds are impossible and the empire is vast.
- You are drawn to the moral clarity of a universe where hope itself is a form of resistance.
- You’d find your people in the Rebellion — a ragtag coalition of true believers held together by conviction more than resources.
- Star Wars is fundamentally a story about ordinary people choosing to matter in an extraordinary conflict — and that is exactly your kind of story.
- The Force may or may not be with you. But the will to use it for something larger than yourself certainly is.
You understand, in the deepest part of yourself, that the journey matters as much as the destination — and that the world’s beauty is worth protecting even at great cost.
- Middle-earth is a world of ancient wonder, deep friendship, and a darkness that only retreats when enough small acts of courage accumulate.
- You would thrive here because you value the fellowship more than the glory — the road more than the arrival.
- Tolkien’s universe rewards patience, loyalty, and the willingness to carry something heavy across a very long distance.
- Those are not burdens to you. They are simply how you move through the world.
You believe that love, loyalty, and doing what’s right are not naive sentiments — they are the most powerful forces in any world, magical or otherwise.
- The Wizarding World is a place of wonder hidden in plain sight, where learning is transformative and the bonds you form at school follow you into every battle.
- You would flourish here because you take both the magic and the friendships seriously — and you understand that one without the other is incomplete.
- Harry Potter’s universe ultimately rewards those who choose to stand for something even when standing is terrifying.
- That choice — made quietly, without guarantee — is something you understand completely.
You see the world clearly — its power structures, its hypocrisies, its brutal arithmetic — and you are not paralysed by that clarity. You use it.
- Westeros is a world that rewards intelligence, adaptability, and the willingness to understand that every alliance is also a negotiation.
- You would survive here — possibly thrive here — because you don’t confuse the world as it is with the world as you’d like it to be.
- Game of Thrones is a story about what happens when the idealists and the realists collide. You are sharp enough to know which one lasts longer.
- Winter always comes. You are already prepared.
You believe the future is worth building — that curiosity, cooperation, and the expansion of understanding are not just ideals but the most practical path forward for any civilisation.
- Star Trek is a universe where the questions matter as much as the answers, and where encountering something utterly alien is cause for wonder rather than fear.
- You would belong here because you are fundamentally optimistic about what intelligence and decency can achieve — while being honest about how hard that achievement is.
- The Federation is the universe’s most ambitious thought experiment: what if we actually got better?
- You don’t just hope that’s possible. You think it’s the only thing worth working toward.
What Is ‘The Hunger Games’ About?
The Hunger Games is a YA dystopian franchise set in the nation of Panem, led by President Snow, who resides in the Capitol and rules over the 12 districts. Following a failed rebellion, the Treaty of Treason is established, requiring each District to send two tributes, a boy and a girl between the ages of 12 and 18, to compete in an annual televised event called The Hunger Games, a battle to the death with only one victor. During the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen volunteers as tribute after her younger sister, Primrose, is reaped. Joining her as District 12’s male tribute is Peeta Mellark, while Haymitch, a former victor who struggles with alcoholism, serves as their mentor. Katniss and Peeta are marketed as “star-crossed lovers,” while Katniss earns the nickname “the girl on fire,” helping them attract sponsors who can provide supplies to survive the Games. Both Katniss and Peeta emerge victorious after a rule change initially allows two tributes from the same District to win. However, the rule is revoked when they become the final two survivors, prompting them to threaten to eat poisonous berries rather than kill each other. The Gamemakers then declare them joint victors, but the Capitol views Katniss’s actions as defiance, and she eventually becomes the face of the rebellion.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will be released in theaters on November 20, 2026. Follow Collider for more updates.
