Human greed, carelessness behind global warming – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has attributed climate change and global warming to greedy individuals, negligence, and over exploitation of natural resources, which have caused damage to the ecological equilibrium established by nature.

During a ceremony in Kano, Obasanjo spoke about his Environment and Sustainability Initiative and Trust Fund, which were named after Abubakar Mahmoud, the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association.

Speaking to guests at the event, the ex-president asserted that climate change is primarily due to harmful human actions and called for greater commitment to safeguarding the environment.

He believes that the world was created in a state of equilibrium, but human actions motivated by selfishness have resulted in significant environmental damage.

“God created the world in harmony, but through our greed, carelessness and reckless exploitation of nature, we have done more harm than good.

“It is our collective responsibility to protect and preserve the environment for future generations,” Obasanjo said.

He emphasized his personal commitment to environmental sustainability, stating that he has planted over 3.5 million trees in the course of trying to combat climate change.

Also speaking, the Kano State Government welcomed the initiative, saying it would be ‘very successful’ in the long run.

According to the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Dahiru Hashim of the province, the project was a significant step towards environmental conservation and sustainable development in the state.

Hashim confirmed the approval of 10,000 tree seedlings for the Mahmoud Environment and Sustainability Trust Fund, as a demonstration of the government’s dedication.

Earlier, Abubakar Mahmoud stated that the objective of the initiative is to promote environmental sustainability and protect the ecosystem for both present and future generations.

He stated that what started as a small-scale environmental initiative has now become specialized conservation programmes, which protect surrounding communities and preserve hundreds of species of plants.
