The Los Angeles Rams’ backup quarterback job behind NFL MVP Matthew Stafford is heating up. First-round 2026 NFL draft pick Ty Simpson is competing with former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Stetson Bennett to be the Rams’ No. 2 quarterback.
Bennett and Simpson split reps during the Rams’ joint practice with the New Orleans Saints on Thursday. Simpson impressed in the Rams’ preseason opener across three quarters of action while Bennett played just the first quarter. the Rams could give Simpson more action in preseason Week 2.
Ty Simpson completed 21 of 25 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns in preseason Week 1. He looked in control of the Rams’ offense and got solid protection from the offensive line. Bennett completed four of six passes for 38 yards and helped the Rams score a field goal in limited action in Week 1.
Bennett is trying to be the Rams’ backup quarterback week-in and week-out for the first time in his career. Former Rams quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo remains an NFL free agent after being the Rams’ backup lat season.
