After each experiencing a turbulent start to the season, Illinois and Michigan State face off at Spartan Stadium on Saturday hoping to get back on the winning trail. Both teams bring 2-3 records into this matchup and are 0-2 in the Big Ten thus far, each wallowing near the base of the conference as things stand.
The Spartans in particular have wilted since starting the season 2-0, losing three straight while scoring a combined 26 points against No. 3 Notre Dame, Nebraska and Wisconsin. Saturday’s home test provides a chance to turn the campaign around for both teams, however, with the season potentially heading into disaster territory already for the loser.
The Fighting Illini topped this contest 38-16 when the teams met last in 2024, having triumphed in three of the last four encounters. MSU averaged just 3.2 yards per pass attempt in the recent 28-point loss to Wisconsin and needs more out of quarterback Alessio Milivojevic, who has as many touchdown throws as he does interceptions this year (three).
Illinois QB Katin Houser has just as many interceptions but eight more touchdown passes to show for his troubles (11 overall), which is the same number of time he’s found star receiver Collin Dixon to score. Saturday’s guests also pack a powerful one-two punch at running back in Aidan Laughery and Ca’Lil Valentine, though the pair have just one TD apiece thru five games.
