Baltimore enters the weekend with an opportunity to make up ground directly against one of the teams it is chasing for the final AL Wild Card spot. The Orioles are coming off a disappointing 4-1 loss to the Angels on Thursday, when their offense struggled to capitalize on a chance to move even with Texas in the standings. Friday begins a particularly important stretch for Baltimore, and the Orioles will turn to Shane Baz, who enters the opener at 4-10 with a 3.86 ERA. Despite the losing record, Baz has pitched considerably better than his win-loss mark suggests, including allowing just one run over 6⅓ innings in his most recent start.
Texas counters with veteran Nathan Eovaldi, who enters Friday at 10-9 with a 4.31 ERA. The Rangers come into the series with some momentum after taking the final two games of their series against the Giants, and they currently sit one game ahead of Baltimore in the Wild Card race. With Kyle Bradish scheduled to face Jacob deGrom on Saturday and Cade Povich lined up against Kumar Rocker on Sunday, Friday’s Baz-Eovaldi matchup begins a weekend that could significantly reshape the playoff picture for both clubs.
