Who can apply
The loan is set up under the Students Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act 2024, which repealed the Nigerian Education Bank Act. The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) runs it.
The FAQ on nelf.gov.ng says: “The Loan is open to all public tertiary Institutions.” The same FAQ says the first phase was for students of federal institutions, with “other phases” to be announced. The site shows 361 collaborating institutions (as shown on nelf.gov.ng, 1 November 2026). Check that your school is participating before you start.
Guides published in September 2026 by The Condia add these points:
- You must be a Nigerian citizen with a valid NIN and BVN.
- Students of private institutions cannot apply.
- Postgraduate students and people who already hold a degree are listed as not eligible.
- A previous loan default, a conviction for fraud, financial crime or exam malpractice, or false documents can disqualify you.
NELFUND has not clearly published the postgraduate and part-time rules on its site. If that applies to you, confirm on nelf.gov.ng before applying.
What you need before you start
- NIN (National Identification Number).
- BVN (Bank Verification Number).
- JAMB registration number.
- A bank account in your own name, with its 10-digit account number.
- A working email address and phone number.
Your names must match across NIN, BVN and JAMB. A different spelling or a missing middle name is one of the most common reasons applications stall. Fix it with NIMC, your bank or JAMB first.
How to apply on nelf.gov.ng (step by step)
NELFUND’s homepage gives three official steps:
- “Register on the Student Loan Application Platform by clicking the ‘APPLY NOW’ button to get started.”
- “Click on the ‘Request for Student Loan’ button and complete the loan application steps and submit.”
- “Your application will be reviewed. After successful verification, payments will be made to your institution for institutional charge, while the upkeep loan will be paid to the bank account you have provided in your profile.”
The detailed steps, as applicants report them
Guides from The Condia (September 2026) and Radio Nigeria (January 2026) describe the screens like this:
- Go to nelf.gov.ng and click APPLY NOW. Create an account with your email, then click the verification link sent to you.
- Verify your identity and student status with your NIN, BVN and JAMB number.
- Select your institution. Enter your matric number, or your admission/JAMB number if you are a fresh student.
- Complete your profile: phone, address, state, LGA, faculty and department.
- Enter your BVN, bank and account number.
- Choose “Institutional charges only” or “Institutional charges plus upkeep”.
- Upload your admission letter. A student ID card or fee invoice is optional.
- Accept the Global Standing Instruction mandate and submit. This mandate lets the loan be recovered from your linked bank accounts later.
Applicants say the form takes about 15 to 30 minutes. To return later, use the LOGIN button on nelf.gov.ng and open the Loans tab. Reported statuses are Pending, Verified, Approved and Disbursed.
NELFUND has not published an official approval time. It depends on how quickly your school verifies you.
What the loan pays and how it arrives
- Institutional charges go straight to your school, not to you.
- Upkeep is ₦20,000 a month, paid into the bank account on your profile.
In March 2026, NELFUND said upkeep remained ₦20,000 monthly, after reports that it had risen to ₦25,000 (The Guardian, 1 October 2026). Ignore any page still quoting ₦25,000.
NELFUND said on 21 October 2026 that the loan is voluntary, based on a student’s own need, not compulsory (Punch, 21 October 2026). Nobody can be made to take it, and nobody can be refused admission or registration for not taking it.
Upkeep has not always arrived on time. In 2026, NELFUND paused and then resumed upkeep payments after problems with digital-wallet accounts (The Gazette, August 2026). Punch reported on 28 October 2026 that upkeep passes through NIBSS Instant Payments and Paystack, which can cause delays. The same report says NELFUND plans to stop students collecting the loan while their parents also pay the fees. On 28 October 2026 its Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr, described two tools being piloted: a digital wallet where approved fees are credited to a wallet tied to your institution and you authorise payment straight to the school (no cash reaches your account), and a parents’ verification portal where a parent enters a matric number to see whether the fees have been paid (The Guardian, 29 October 2026). Over 400,000 applications were in the wallet pilot at the time.
How repayment works
- Interest-free. You repay what you borrowed.
- When: repayment cannot begin until two years after you complete NYSC, and only once you are employed.
- How much: no more than 10% of your gross monthly income, deducted by your employer (Punch, 13 October 2026).
Punch reports that the first repayments are expected around 2028. The Condia’s guide says unemployed beneficiaries do not repay until they find work. NELFUND has not set out the full rules for unemployed and self-employed people on its site, so confirm on nelf.gov.ng.
Application window
The 2026/2027 application is open. Lagos State University’s notice to its students (27 September 2026, reported by TVC News) says the NELFUND portal opened on 23 September 2026 and stays open until 31 December 2026. NELFUND had not posted those dates on nelf.gov.ng itself when we checked on 1 November 2026, so confirm with your school’s student affairs or NELFUND desk. LASU also told students to verify their JAMB details and update their matric number and department on the school portal before applying, “to prevent disqualification or delays arising from discrepancies or data mismatches”.
Pages that attach the 2025 dates to a “2026/2027” headline are recycling last session’s notice.
Common problems and fixes
- Status stuck on Pending. Usually your school has not uploaded or verified your record yet. Visit your school’s NELFUND desk or student affairs unit and ask them to confirm your upload.
- Name mismatch. Correct your name with NIMC, your bank or JAMB so all three agree, then retry.
- School has not uploaded your records. You cannot finish the application until it does. Only your school can fix this.
- Wrong or unclear documents. Re-upload a clear scan of your admission letter.
Scams to avoid
- Applying is free. Never pay anyone to apply, “fast-track” approval or release your upkeep.
- Use only nelf.gov.ng. NELFUND has warned students about fake portals.
- Do not open loan links shared on WhatsApp or Telegram.
- Never share your BVN, NIN, password or bank OTP with an “agent”.
- Use only the contact channels listed on nelf.gov.ng.
Numbers so far
NELFUND had disbursed ₦372.62 billion as of 3 October 2026 across 319 institutions, and processed 1,659,853 applications (Nairametrics, October 2026; Punch, 13 October 2026).
The homepage counter shows 1,563,528 students registered and 2,311,085 loan applications (as shown on nelf.gov.ng, 1 November 2026). These counters measure different things from press-reported figures, so they will not match.
