How Joseph Peko changes Washington football's defensive line

The Washington Huskies got a surprise addition to their 2026 class in three-star defensive tackle Domata Peko after he flipped his commitment from the Colorado Buffaloes.

The 6-foot-3, 310-pound product of Oaks Christian High School, whose father Domata played defensive tackle for 14 years in the NFL, brings a different element to an already high-end 2026 crop of defensive linemen. His run-stopping ability, motor, and high football IQ are all apparent on film, and while they may not make him an early contributor in what has quickly become a deep, promising unit up front for defensive coordinator Ryan Walters.

On one play from his senior season, Peko shows off that awareness by sniffing out a screen play, disengaging from his block, and tracking down a running back from behind, which is exactly the kind of effort and understanding of the position that defensive line coach Jason Kaufusi is looking for in the middle.

“He loves my versatility and sees me playing anywhere from the nose all the way out to 4i and the five,” Peko told Dawgman.com’s Scott Eklund. “That tells me they feel I can help them a lot, and that’s really exciting and gets me pumped up.”

Nose tackle looks like the primary fit for Peko, which could help former four-star recruit TI Umu-Cais, who demonstrated a high-level understanding of pass rush moves and plans on his high school film, move around the formation a little more after mainly playing the position during spring practice. While Peko primarily looks like a run stopper in the middle of the field, his film also shows the motor and power necessary to make an impact as a pass rusher.

“I feel like I am a run-stopper who can give you some pass rush,” Peko added in his interview with Eklund. “I have a good motor, and I love to get after it up front and mix it up.”
