Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña leaves game after being hit by pitch on right hand

· · 1 min read

Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña was removed from Wednesday’s game against the Angels shortly after being hit on the right hand by a pitch. The Astros announced Peña left the game with a “right hand contusion.”

Peña was hit by a 100 mph sinker from Angels right-hander Walbert Ureña in the first inning, resulting in a strikeout after umpires ruled Peña went around on a swing. Peña was checked by a team trainer on the field and in the dugout but stayed in the game on defense.

Peña played defense in the second and third innings. He was replaced by pinch-hitter Nick Allen, though, in the bottom of the third inning.

Houston’s shortstop and leadoff hitter, Peña entered Wednesday hitting .098 over his last 12 games but still had a 127 OPS-plus in 78 games, second-highest among Astros hitters behind Yordan Alvarez.

Peña missed about five weeks in the first half to a right hamstring strain and spent 10 days on the injured list just before the All-Star break due to a left calf strain.

Astros manager Joe Espada was ejected in the top of the third inning Wednesday for arguing a non-check swing call on a hit-by-pitch of Mike Trout, apparently taking exception in lieu of the call on Peña.
