Corey Seager was quick to make a name for himself after being drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers with the 18th overall selection in the 2012 MLB Draft. 

After spending a few years in the minors, he would make his MLB debut in September 2015 and would be on the Opening Day roster the following year. He would go on to win the NL Rookie of the Year Award and become an All-Star. 

Seager would continue to be impressive, building up a solid case to make some big money when he became a free agent following the 2021 season. That is when the Texas Rangers decided to sign him to a 10-year, $325 million contract, which has paid off.

Seager has been the franchise star for the Rangers since signing his 10-year deal in 2021. He helped the team win their first World Series title back in 2023. 

However, he has not been his usual self this season. He has looked befuddled on off-speed pitches this year, and he’s pulling the ball a bit much. 

Now, he is dealing with some back issues and is currently on the concussion protocol, so that could be a part of it. But still, Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller suggests he is the most scrutinized player on the roster. 

“Has it just been a rough couple of months or is this 32-year-old shortstop simply over the hill? With 5.5 years left on his $325M deal, the Rangers sure are hoping for the former. For what it’s worth, Seager has historically been a considerably better hitter after Memorial Day than before it, and his barrel rate remains as excellent as ever. However, he is whiffing like never before and has an OPS that looks like a typo compared to what has been an .871 mark over the previous 11 seasons.”

Not all hope is lost here. Seager has historically been a better hitter after Memorial Day, for whatever reason. So, fans shouldn’t be surprised if he comes off the concussion protocol and starts mashing baseballs once again.

At least, that’s what the front office is hoping for.
