Less than 48 hours before the start of their season, the Patriots finally wrapped up one of their most pressing pieces of business from the offseason.

New England agreed to a contract extension with star CB Christian Gonzalez, making the former first-round pick the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback as he had wished.

The Patriots said all along that their offer would have made Gonzalez the highest-paid player at the position, but reports indicated Gonzalez wanted to break the bank in a way that kept him at the top in 2027 as well. Does his new contract do that?

1. Christian Gonzalez, Patriots

• Annual salary: $33.75 million

Gonzalez became the NFL’s new highest-paid cornerback with his four-year, $135 million extension just ahead of Week 1, but he didn’t shatter the record, only beating Devon Witherspoon by $750,000 annually. If he wants to remain the highest-paid cornerback into 2027, the good news is that many of the top players at the position already got paid this offseason. For at least 2026, Gonzalez will set the tone for cornerback salaries at just shy of $34 million.

2. Devon Witherspoon, Seahawks

• Annual salary: $33 million

The 2023 first-round pick set a new high-water mark at the position with a four-year, $132 million deal with the Seahawks after helping Seattle win the Super Bowl last season. Witherspoon’s deal includes $97.3 million in guarantees, $4.7 million shy of Gonzalez.

3. Denzel Ward, Browns

• Annual salary: $31 million

The Browns gave Denzel Ward an updated deal this offseason as well, inking him to a two-year extension that briefly made him the highest-paid cornerback. Ward is on his third NFL contract, unlike Gonzalez, Witherspoon and Trent McDuffie.

4. Trent McDuffie, Rams

• Annual salary: $31 million

Before Gonzalez, Witherspoon and Ward received their deals, McDuffie became the highest-paid cornerback upon being traded by the Chiefs to the Rams. McDuffie is no longer the highest-paid cornerback or even the Rams’ biggest offseason addition, but he is an integral part of L.A.’s secondary in a Super Bowl-or-bust season.

5. Sauce Gardner, Colts

• Annual salary: $30.1 million

Sauce Gardner actually signed his four-year, $120.4 million extension with the Jets in 2025, but New York found a taker when he was dealt to the Colts four months later. At more than $30 million per year, Gardner will need to start playing like he did in 2022 and 2023 to justify the deal.

6. Derek Stingley Jr. Texans

• Annual salary: $30 million

The Texans wisely got ahead of the pack by extending Derek Stingley Jr. about as early as possible, with the standout corner becoming the NFL’s first $30 million player at the position and getting a deal that is nearly fully guaranteed. Stingley is coming off back-to-back First-Team All-Pro seasons in Houston.

7. Jaycee Horn, Panthers

• Annual salary: $25 million

The Panthers gave CB Jaycee Horn a clean four-year, $100 million extension in 2025 to make him the him the highest-paid player at the position until Stingley shattered that mark just a week later.

8. Patrick Surtain II, Broncos

• Annual salary: $24 million

The cornerback many consider to be the best at the position earns only $24 million annually, making Patrick Surtain II a bargain for the Broncos after he signed an extension just ahead of the 2024 season.

9. DaRon Bland, Cowboys

• Annual salary: $22.5 million

The Cowboys rewarded DaRon Bland with a lucrative extension in 2025 despite him missing most of the 2024 season, and they are still waiting on a return from that investment after an up-and-down season from the former fifth-round pick last year.

10. A.J. Terrell, Falcons

• Annual salary: $21.175 million

Of the 10 highest-paid cornerbacks, A.J. Terrell’s deal dates back the longest. The Falcons gave their No. 1 corner his new contract in the summer of 2024, and the former first-round pick remains a lynchpin in Atlanta’s secondary.

Most guaranteed money for a cornerback

Gonzalez’s $102 million in guarantees also tops the leaderboard at the position:

The Patriots star is now one of two cornerbacks to receive $100 million in guaranteed money, joining new Rams CB Trent McDuffie, and his $102 million comes in ahead of the $97.6 million that Witherspoon received on his extension earlier in the summer.

Stingley’s guaranteed money ranks fourth at the position, but nearly all of his $90 million contract is guaranteed, giving him an advantage.
