‘He’s Always in the QB’s Ear’: Two-Time Super Bowl Champion Reveals Unseen Side of Patrick Mahomes After Leaving Chiefs Behind

Chris Oladokun spent years as Patrick Mahomes‘ backup in Kansas City, earning two Super Bowl rings without finding a permanent place in the NFL. After another opportunity fell through this offseason, the former draft pick had to choose between waiting for another unlikely chance or beginning a new journey overseas.

Oladokun chose a fresh start with the B.C. Lions in the Canadian Football League. He has recently reflected on leaving the Chiefs behind and embracing an unexpected new chapter in his football career.

Oladokun was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He later joined Kansas City’s practice squad and spent two seasons behind Mahomes, collecting Super Bowl rings in 2023 and 2024 without regular NFL game time.

His clearest NFL opportunity came against the Tennessee Titans, when he completed 11 of 16 passes for 111 yards. After missing a preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks, Oladokun was released by Kansas City through an injury settlement in August.

He did not receive another NFL offer and signed with the B.C. Lions. He will begin as a backup to Nathan Rourke, one of the CFL’s top quarterbacks.

Oladokun recently shared the message he received from Mahomes after his NFL exit.

“Dude, I checked my phone, he [Patrick Mahomes] was the first dude that texted me,” Oladokun said, according to A to Z Sports. He added, “He’s the first dude to help someone out and lend a helping hand. In past preseasons and stuff like that, he’s always in the QB’s ear, whether it’s me or Gardner [Minshew]. Everyone misses his presence.”

Oladokun announced the move with the words “New beginnings!” on his Instagram story. The CFL opportunity also brings him closer to his younger brother Jordan Oladokun, who joined the B.C. Lions practice roster.

The family connection gives Oladokun a personal reason to settle quickly in British Columbia. Oladokun’s next test is different. He must earn playing time behind Rourke, make the B.C. Lions roster, and turn an unexpected move into a real CFL opportunity.
