Henry Cavill’s Prime Video Sci-Fi Series Officially Gets First Major Update in 4 Months

Hannah covers horror, sci-fi, and games at Collider, where she writes news and features, reviews new releases, and interviews the people who make them. She’s helping build out Collider‘s gaming coverage, with Pokémon as one of her specialties. If she isn’t writing about a monster, she’s probably watching one on a tape from her VHS collection.

For Henry Cavill, getting to bring Warhammer 40,000 to the screen means taking on a universe where even explaining the basics can become an evening’s commitment. Games Workshop’s tabletop franchise has expanded into an enormous collection of novels, video games, and stories about a future nobody should want to live in. Picking which corner deserves the first adaptation is a formidable assignment before anyone starts calculating the cost of a Space Marine.

Cavill’s enthusiasm makes him an appealing person to help guide that decision. Fans of The Witcher know how much he values the material behind his characters, and his interest in Warhammer predates his involvement in bringing it to Prime Video. The question is how to translate that passion into a series that longtime players recognize and newcomers can follow without homework.

Mike Flanagan has revealed that the team has found a “very cool and unexpected on-ramp” into Cavill’s Warhammer 40,000 adaptation. Speaking in a new interview, the writer discussed the challenge of introducing audiences to such an extensive fictional world while keeping the actual story under wraps. “Henry Cavill would be furious if I divulged anything about what we’re working on,” Flanagan said. He pointed to the setting’s roughly 700 novels, alongside its games and wider mythology, as evidence of the scale involved. Despite that challenge, he expressed enthusiasm for the work:

“[We found] a very cool and unexpected on-ramp into it, which I think is very exciting. I’m sworn to secrecy on all of it, but I’m having the time of my life working on it.”

What Is Happening With Henry Cavill’s ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Series?

Flanagan’s involvement became public in July, when Games Workshop’s financial reporting stated that initial outlines had been completed and script work was expected to follow. Cavill subsequently reaffirmed his involvement as a performer as well as a producer in August, while keeping his role secret. The latest comments offer another indication of the project’s creative direction, although its entry point remains undisclosed. Finding that starting point matters because Warhammer offers far more than armored warriors fighting spectacular battles. Its oppressive institutions, religious fanaticism, and supernatural horrors provide material for a wide range of stories. A series needs characters worth following through that nightmare, particularly when the setting itself offers so little reassurance that anyone will survive it.

That is where Flanagan’s experience becomes interesting. The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass build their horror around people whose grief, loyalties, and convictions shape the danger around them. Those instincts could serve this universe well, where believing absolutely in a cause can be as frightening as anything waiting on a battlefield. For now, the mystery is which story Cavill and Flanagan have chosen to tell. An unexpected starting point gives fans something to debate, but the next substantial reveal will be learning whose perspective brings us into this very unpleasant future.

Warhammer 40,000 is in development for Prime Video. A release date has not been announced.
