Henry Cavill & Mike Flanagan’s Sci-Fi Prime Video Series Warhammer Hits Major Milestone

Henry Cavill and Mike Flanagan’s Warhammer 40,000 just hit a major milestone.

Flanagan has provided a key update to the sci-fi Prime Video series, offering a new information about the show as its development continues. The upcoming, live-action Warhammer 40,000 TV show is being led by Cavill and Flanagan, both of whom are working on bringing the dark sci-fi universe to life on the small screen. Development of the series has received general updates since December 2024, when Amazon MGM Studios finalized a deal with Games Workshop on the adaptation rights to the universe. Flanagan joined the project in July 2026.

Now, speaking with Deadline about his future projects, including Carrie season 2, Flanagan offered a major update on him and Cavill’s approach to Warhammer 40,000 onscreen. The filmmaker explained the challenge of adapting a universe that has hundreds of novels and other pieces of media, any of which could be used as a launchpad for an adaptation. However, he confirmed that he and Cavill have officially found a starting point for the franchise’s live-action debut, expressing his excitement without revealing what to expect.

Check out what Flanagan had to say below:

Henry Cavill would be furious if I divulged anything about what we’re working on. All I can say is that Warhammer is a fascinating world. The challenge, as anyone familiar with it knows, is finding a way in – it’s so big. There are 700 novels, discounting the [table top] game, the interactive elements and so much of the rest of the lore.

[We found] a very cool and unexpected on-ramp into it, which I think is very exciting. I’m sworn to secrecy on all of it, but I’m having the time of my life working on it.

The new Warhammer 40,000 TV show is expected to star Cavill in the leading role, while he also serves as an executive producer on the series. It’s also planned to be the start of a larger expansion of the franchise, with its onscreen presence under Amazon’s umbrella getting developed into a shared universe. Since story details have yet to be revealed, it’s unclear how the show will play out, and from where it’s story will derive. But with a starting point now in place, Flanagan’s update is a positive one for the new series.

Warhammer 40,000‘s debut on an Amazon-owned platform has already happened, too, priming audiences for the upcoming series. This came in the form of an episode of Secret Level, an anthology series with episodes derivative of various video games. For the sci-fi universe, its episode takes place after Space Marine 2, a third-person shooter released in 2024. An animated series based on the episode is in development as of August 2026, with Cavill serving as executive producer alongside creators John Orloff and Dave Wilson.

As for the live-action series, there’s no word yet on when production will begin, nor how long it’ll take for the series to see the light of day. But the franchise is still plotting plenty of other major releases in the meantime, including the upcoming Total War: Warhammer 40,000, which will take the franchise into the world of real-time strategy. The universe isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, which means whatever Flanagan and Cavill have been planning, it’s something that’ll stay relevant no matter what.

Although there’s still no official word on where Cavill and Flanagan have decided to start the show, it’s clear the pair have a distinct vision for what Warhammer 40,000 will look like on the small screen. Since there’s now a plan in place, details are likely to be revealed sooner rather than later. Flanagan has been sworn to secrecy for now, but whatever grand plan is in place, it sounds like it’ll be the beginning of something grand for the franchise as a whole.
