Rumors about Kyrie Irving heading to Miami are loud, but the reality is that the Heat simply do not have the tools to make it happen. Dallas Mavericks fans should smile at this news because the star guard has become a key part of the team’s identity since 2023.
ESPN insider Shams Charania laid out the hard truth on Wednesday during his appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. He made it clear that while the Heat are watching, they cannot just hand over a single pick to get the job done. “Knowing the Heat, they’re going be monitoring Kyrie Irving,” Charania said on Wednesday on the Pat McAfee. That monitoring is not the same as a deal being ready to go.
The Price Tag Is Too High for Miami
The Heat gave away future assets to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo. According to BasketballNews.com, Miami traded away three first-round picks, a swap, and other assets just to land Giannis over the offseason. They are left with only one tradeable first-round pick, which is not enough to satisfy Dallas for a player of Irving’s caliber.
Charania explained that the cost to get Irving would be steep and that one pick will not cut it. According to an X clip shared by Heat Central on October 29, 2026, he stated, “I think the price would be higher than that.” The Heat would need to add players to the mix, but their roster is stacked with veterans and lacks the young talent Dallas wants to build around Cooper Flagg.
Why This Speculation Falls Apart
Even though there is buzz about Irving wanting to play in Miami, the trade logistics are a dead end. Ethan J. Skolnick said on the Five on the Floor podcast that Irving has a level of interest in playing for the Heat. “I think we’ve both heard that he’s interested in playing down in Miami,” Skolnick said. He also noted that Miami coach Erik Spoelstra respects the star guard. “I also know Spoelstra holds him in very high regard.”
The Heat roster is old, with only three players under 25 years old, and they do not have the young stars to entice Dallas. Joey Haverford wrote for Heavy that Davion Mitchell and Andrew Wiggins were mentioned as possible salary fillers, but neither offers the long‑term value needed to match Irving’s salary under NBA salary‑cap trade rules.d Andrew Wiggins were cited as possible salary fillers, provides the majority of the salary needed to match Irving’s financial figures under NBA salary cap trade regulations. Without a third team to help, this trade stays in the realm of talk only.
Miami just secured its first win of the season against the Atlanta Hawks, but that victory does not solve their trade asset problem. The Heat beat Atlanta 129-117, with Giannis posting 24 points and 18 rebounds, yet they remain unable to offer Dallas what it truly needs to part with its superstar.
