HBO’s Masterpiece 8-Part Psychological Thriller Series Becomes A Must-Watch Once Again

One of HBO‘s best thriller series has once again become a timely must-watch, thanks to a new release, and it comes with a cast that has only gotten better over the years. HBO’s slate of upcoming shows is packed with exciting releases. That includes both returning series, like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2, and new releases, such as the Harry Potter reboot.

Historically, HBO’s many exciting shows have made it the top landing spot for those in search of prestige series. From The Sopranos to True Detective to Game of Thrones to Westworld and everything in between, HBO has found immense success across a wide array of genres. That said, thrillers come near the top of the list, if not the very top.

HBO has released many gripping, must-watch thriller series over the years. Those shows usually have in common the fact that they focus on dark stories with impeccable casts that mix veterans and rising stars. One of HBO’s best such shows is a psychological thriller series with only one season, and a new release has just made it a timely watch years later.

Sharp Objects is one of HBO’s most intense psychological thriller shows to date. Based on the Gillian Flynn novel of the same name, Sharp Objects features a dark twist that sits among the genre’s most sinister, all with an immersive atmosphere, complex characters, and traumatic events in a small town that hook the viewer all the way through. Now, a new streaming sensation makes this a perfect time to revisit HBO’s Sharp Objects.

Prime Video’s New Movie Makes HBO’s Sharp Objects Once Again A Must-Watch

Hungry is a survival thriller that was originally released in theaters on June 3. More recently, Hungry arrived on Prime Video on October 1. The movie follows a group on vacation as they suddenly need to fight for their lives in the Louisiana bayou as a bloodthirsty hippo threatens to kill them all. Hungry currently stands as the most-watched movie on Prime Video in the United States, per FlixPatrol, and that is the reason why viewers should consider checking out Sharp Objects. After all, Hungry‘s main star, Madison Davenport, was part of the HBO thriller’s main cast, playing Ashley Wheeler in Sharp Objects.

Anyone wanting to get more depth out of Davenport will find that in spades in Sharp Objects. The HBO psychological thriller series is a must-watch that focuses on Amy Adams’ Camille Preaker, a journalist wrestling with alcoholism and her mental health, as she returns to her hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri, looking into the murders of two young girls. Davenport’s Ashley’s background as a cheerleader leads to her fighting for the highest spot on the social food chain. Every move she makes is thinking about her status. Sharp Objects also features names like Sydney Sweeney, Patricia Clarkson, Chris Messina, Eliza Scanlen, and more.

Sharp Objects is one of HBO’s highest-rated miniseries. With eight episodes, the psychological thriller series boasts a near-perfect 92% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes based on a whopping 293 reviews, earning the Certified Fresh label. Sharp Objects also holds a high 83% audience score on the review aggregator. Aside from its overwhelmingly positive reception, Sharp Objects ends on a massive cliffhanger related to the reveal of the real killer. Due to that, a second season has always seemed like a perfect way to explore the fallout from that moment.

However, eight years later, it seems like there is no interest from the players involved to make Sharp Objects season 2 a reality. Speaking to Deadline in 2018, then HBO president of programming — now Co-Chair and Chief Content Officer, Skydance DTC, after the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount Skydance — Casey Bloys claimed Adams did not want to live in the shoes of such a dark character again. That said, speaking to ABC News back in the same year, Adams herself said, “We’ll see…it has to be the right time…but I’d be open to a conversation.” However, given the 8-year gap, Sharp Objects season 2 happening is unlikely.
