HBO Max's 49-Episode Action Series With Alan Ritchson Is One Of Its Best

· · 4 min read

Alan Ritchson stars in an HBO Max series with four seasons that is one of the streaming service’s most action-packed shows and features fan-favorite characters. Ritchson has cemented himself as one of the biggest actors in Hollywood thanks to his role as Jack Reacher in the Prime Video action thriller series Reacher. The actor has gone from that project to several action releases.

One of those was Netflix’s War Machine, which became one of the most-watched Netflix movies of all time earlier this year, showcasing how the actor’s connection with the audience is not only related to Prime Video and Reacher. Before Ritchson became as big of a name as he is today, the actor was already starring in high-profile projects and action-oriented shows and movies.

HBO Max’s library of TV shows is filled with releases for fans of the action genre. They do not necessarily have to be straightforward action thrillers like Reacher, but shows with plenty of intense fighting scenes, such as House of the Dragon, Peacemaker, and so on. This is where Ritchson comes in, starring in one of the best TV shows on HBO Max in the action department.

Before he played Jack Reacher, Ritchson became a fan-favorite for playing two characters in live-action DC TV shows. The first of those was a Justice League member, as Ritchson gave life to Aquaman in Smallville opposite Tom Welling’s Clark Kent/Superman. After that, the Reacher star moved to another DC character, playing Hank Hall, aka Hawk, in Titans, and the show deserves more attention.

HBO Max’s Titans Is An Action-Packed Alan Ritchson Series With Major DC Heroes

Titans was originally released on the DC Universe app before it moved over to HBO Max, where all four seasons of the superhero series are currently available to stream. With Reacher season 5 only expected to be released in 2027, with no firm release date in sight, anyone looking for an action series where Ritchson gets to brutally beat bad guys can find that in spades on Titans. From the start, the live-action DC series set out to shock viewers and separate itself from other DC adaptations, being dark, gritty, TV-MA, and featuring brutal fight sequences. Even Robin was dishing out rage.

Titans is the adult version of the Teen Titans, and for the many viewers who grew up with the animated series starring that team, characters like Dick Grayson/Robin, Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy, and more will feel familiar, though the series does take all of them in bold and surprising new directions. Batman himself is present in the show, with an older Bruce Wayne being played by Game of Thrones‘ Jorah Mormont actor Iain Glen.

As for Ritchson, he plays the emotionally complex Hawk, a hero who deals with the pain from all the injuries he accumulated throughout his career as a street-level hero with no powers. Titans allows Ritchson to not only put his towering physique to the test, but also flex his acting muscles with many dramatic moments, emotional conversations, and even a few truly hilarious beats. Titans holds a stellar 89% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes for its four seasons and 49 episodes.

While Titans is worth watching for Ritchson, the show’s perfectly cast DC heroes and the bond they create, exciting costumes, powerful villains, and more, I have to note that the superhero series could have reached a much higher shelf than it did. Given the sheer talent in front of the screen, with actors like Ritchson, Glen, Titus Welliver (Lex Luthor), Brenton Thwaites (Robin/Nightwing), and many more, as well as how the show focused on the most popular DC team besides the Justice League, Titans could have turned out to be one of the universally beloved live-action superhero adaptations.

However, with plenty of confusing decisions, such as nonsensical character deaths, botched finales, and more led to the show becoming divisive. Despite its high Rotten Tomatoes score, which is boosted by the show’s final two seasons, where Titans really hit its stride, the DC series holds a lower 67% audience score. Still, action-wise, Titans is easily one of the best TV shows on HBO Max, and Reacher fans will get to see plenty of Alan Ritchson breaking villains’ bones and leaving them a bloody mess as Hawk.
