The Atlanta Hawks undoubtedly exceeded expectations this year

Atlanta was mediocre in the first stage of the season, prompting many to declare it a Play-In team at best. Impressively, the Hawks traded star point guard Trae Young to the Washington Wizards for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert before the Feb. 5 deadline and experienced game-changing results.

The Hawks finished the regular season with a 46-36 record, earning the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference and narrowly avoiding the Play-In tournament. Although Atlanta’s postseason ended on an embarrassing note (51-point loss), they competed well against the New York Knicks for most of their first-round series and have something to build on moving forward.

brown-trade-idea" target="_blank">Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley is ready for the Hawks to take things up a notch this offseason, citing that a blockbuster three-team trade sending an ex-Golden State Warriors disgruntled forward (Jonathan Kuminga) to the Boston Celtics for a bona fide 29-year-old star guard could occur.

“The Hawks might be willing to pay a premium for (Jaylen) Brown, a Georgia native, since their young core looks ready to fly but probably needs a top-shelf talent to really take off,” Buckley wrote Thursday.

“He could be the go-to option they lack in the half-court while adding even more length, physicality, and disruption to their perimeter group. Missi, meanwhile, could address this group’s lack of size at center. If the Celtics don’t turn a Brown trade into a Giannis Antetokounmpo megamove, they probably wouldn’t want a pile of picks in exchange for their star.”

“So, they could instead seek out a package like this: a plug-and-play near-star in Murphy, an impact stretch big in (Onyeka) Okongwu, and a future first-round swap to perhaps dangle in a future deal (plus Looney to mostly make the money work but also serve as emergency depth).”

Buckley’s full trade proposal would send the No. 8 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, Kuminga (sign-and-trade), Zaccharie Risacher, and a 2028 first-round pick (via the Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers, or Utah Jazz) to the New Orleans Pelicans, Brown and Yves Missi to the Celtics, and Trey Murphy III, Okongwu, Kevon Looney, and a 2030 first-round pick swap (via Atlanta) to the Hawks.

While adding Brown to the equation wouldn’t make the Hawks the clear favorites to represent the Eastern Conference in the 2027 NBA Finals, they would certainly position themselves for a deeper postseason run.

Jayson Tatum’s lengthy recovery from his mid-2025 Achilles injury forced Brown to assume larger offensive responsibilities, and the California product was electric in every way imaginable. Brown averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists, showcasing his ability to thrive as Boston’s high-usage No. 1 scoring option.

Given the fact that The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer named the Hawks as a potential offseason landing spot for Brown on Tuesday, Buckley’s trade idea is far from a wildly unrealistic concept.
