The Atlanta Hawks joined the basketball community in mourning the death of NBA legend Bob Pettit on Thursday.
LSU, Pettit’s alma mater, announced his passing. The cause of death was not disclosed. He was 93 years old.
One of the pioneering stars, Pettit played 11 seasons in the NBA, all with the Hawks. He led them to the championship in 1958. The Hall of Famer won the league’s first MVP award in 1956 and again in 1959.

On Instagram, the Hawks shared a poignant reflection on Pettit.
“He set a standard of excellence that continues to inspire generations of players and fans. His relentless work ethic, competitive spirit, and commitment to the game helped shape the identity of our franchise,” said the team.
“Bob was a true ambassador for the sport and a role model for countless fans. We are grateful for his contributions to our franchise and to basketball history. His retired No. 9 jersey continues to hang proudly at State Farm Arena as a lasting reminder of the impact he made on our organization.”

Pettit was an 11-time All-Star and a four-time All-Star Game MVP, tied with fellow icon Kobe Bryant for most in NBA history.
Before the Hawks drafted him with the No. 2 pick in 1954, Pettit starred at LSU. He led the SEC in scoring in all of his three seasons with the Tigers, including 31.4 points per game as a senior. LSU retired his No. 50 jersey in 1954.
Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he returned to his hometown after his NBA career and worked in banking and finance.
