In the Indianapolis Colts’ backup quarterback competition, has an early leader emerged in training camp?

According to Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan, during Saturday’s practice, Riley Leonard “definitely received the bulk of the second-team work.”

Jake Arthur of Roundtable Sports added that Leonard was “noticeably more active than Anthony Richardson Sr.” Arthur noted that Leonard was 8-for-15 passing, while Richardson was only 1-for-3.

Shane Steichen did say after the first training camp practice that the plan was for Leonard and Richardson to rotate with the second-team offense, although that wasn’t the case on Saturday.

While Richardson competes for the backup role, his trade request is still on the table. GM Chris Ballard’s intention at this time is to keep Richardson. The Colts aren’t going to “give him away,” he said, but a trade is still a possibility.

A potentially important date for the Colts, Richardson, and any possible trade is approaching.

We will have to wait and see if this was just a one-off or an emerging trend.
