An accurate Yorkshire bowling performance put Warwickshire under significant pressure during the majority of day two at Scarborough as they replied to a first-innings 469 with 225-7.
Both counties are chasing a third County Championship win of the season, and Yorkshire look the most likely to get it following a hard-working performance with bat and ball on a North Marine Road pitch lacking its traditional pace.
Warwickshire opener Rob Yates led the way with 65 and, either side of tea, shared 54 for the fifth wicket with his captain Ed Barnard, the all-rounder who has had an impressive game so far. But the Bears will need more if they are to leave the seaside with a positive result.
Jack White was Yorkshire’s standout bowler with 3-39, though Dom Bess claimed two wickets with his off-spin and took a stunning one-handed catch at mid-wicket.
Barnard, meanwhile, finished with three wickets as Yorkshire advanced from an overnight 386-6 and then a responsible 60 not out.
White forced Alex Davies to chop on eight balls into Warwickshire’s reply, the opener undone shortly before lunch by a ball which was not there for the shot.
Yorkshire were able to strangle the run-rate as they found the consistency which the Bears had been unable to during the opening day.
After lunch, Hasan Ali bowled Dan Mousley via an inside-edge on to middle stump, the ball also keeping low – 38-2 in the 20th over.
Sam Hain was dropped in the slips off Matthew Revis on seven but survived only to add 20 more before he softly chipped White, bowling his first ball of a new spell, to mid-wicket.
And further success came in White’s next over when Beau Webster was also caught at mid-wicket, this time courtesy of a one-handed Bess stunner going low to his left. That left Warwickshire 92-4 in the 38th.
Yates, however, was playing nicely. Immediately before reaching his fifty off 132 balls, he beautifully drove Hasan almost arrow straight down the ground for four.
Barnard then settled nicely at the crease and pulled the miserly George Hill for six, the Bears reaching tea at 124-4 in 47 overs.
But Bess struck two key blows in as many balls when a full ball bowled Yates off his pad before Zen Malik edged behind pushing forwards – 146-6.
Indian overseas debutant Manav Suthar then united with Barnard to share an important 64.
Barnard reached his fifty off 87 balls, but he lost Suthar caught behind as he advanced down the pitch to Hill with the score on 210.
Both sides would have been satisfied with their morning’s work.
Yorkshire added 83 runs for the loss of four wickets as their first innings concluded.
Jonny Bairstow reached a 46-ball fifty in the day’s opening over before he and Bess miscued Ethan Bamber’s seam to cover and mid-wicket in the space of three balls – 408-8 in the 101st over. Bairstow finished with 68 off 59 balls.
An entertaining 56-run partnership for the ninth wicket between Hill and Hasan took the hosts beyond 450. Hill contributed 30 and Hasan 27, the latter hoisting successive sixes over long-on off Barnard’s seam.
Suthar’s left-arm spin then removed Hill before Barnard got Hasan to wrap up the innings.
Like Barnard, Bamber and Suthar also claimed three wickets in the innings. Bamber is now the leading wicket-taker in Division One this season with 32.
Warwickshire need to reach 320 to avoid the follow-on. Yorkshire will get a new ball one over into day three.
