GTA 6 Online Official Age Verification Will Impact Millions Of Gamers

Grand Theft Auto has always been about breaking the rules, stealing cars, and causing chaos in a city where almost anything can happen. With Grand Theft Auto 6 bringing players back to Vice City, fans are looking forward to getting into trouble and spending lots of time exploring its online world. However, there may be one real-world rule that players can’t escape—no matter how fast they drive—and it’s age verification.

A Reddit discussion has sparked concerns about whether GTA 6 Online players in Australia will need official identification to access the game’s online features. Would some fans not be able to play one of the decade’s most anticipated games at all just because they don’t have (or want to) an ID to show?

Why Are GTA 6 Players Worried About Age Verification?

The r/PS5 thread in question centers on reports that Australian players may need a driver’s license or another accepted form of identification to access age-restricted online games.

The concerns, needless to say, stem from the fact that Australia introduced new age-verification requirements for certain online services on March 9, 2026. These rules cover online games classified as R18+, requiring age checks before users can access their online components.

“I can’t wait for all this shit to be rolled back in a few years. Any politicians who want to support that will have my vote.”

Interestingly, Grand Theft Auto 5 carries an R18+ classification in Australia and is technically not supposed to let players engage without document verification, since the law took effect back in March. But according to reports, gamers can still access the online without document submission. GTA 6 would likely feature similar requirements when its online features become available in Australia. That said, it’s unknown when the restrictions will actually be enforced.

Will Players Need To Upload Their ID To Play GTA 6?

Some of us are understandably uncomfortable with the idea of providing official identification just to play a video game online. The concern isn’t as much about whether adults should be allowed to play mature games. It’s more about how much personal information that has to be shared.

Unfortunately, Australia has a long history of strict media classification and censorship policies, so there’s little reason to expect these age-verification rules to be rolled back anytime soon. And GTA 6 will likely have to adapt to this system too.

“Australia has had overly restrictive censorship laws for decades, I wouldn’t count on it being rolled back.”

Also, to debunk what some of you may be thinking, age verification doesn’t necessarily mean only a specific kind of license will be accepted. Some reports may have wrongly indicated such a case, but alternative documents or verification methods will likely be available. So, if you don’t own a driver’s license, there’s no need to worry.

Could Gamers Lose Access To GTA 6 Online?

At the time of writing, there is no confirmed policy stating that players worldwide will be locked out of GTA 6 Online if they don’t complete document-based age verification. But it’s likely going to be the case if you reside in Australia.

“For online or single player? If this is for single player, this is truly the end of console gaming for me. All this “for the children” bullshit just to feed Palantir and eliminate internet anonymity. Scary shit people need to be opposing.”

The distinction between online and offline play also matters. Australia’s rules target access to age-restricted online gaming, so players may still be able to enjoy GTA 6’s single-player campaign, which is an offline experience.

Privacy Remains a Major Concern

For many users, including gamers, the biggest question is what happens to their information after they verify their identity and age. They rightfully want to know who handles their documents, how their data is protected, and whether submitting verification will become a regular requirement for online gaming. Until Rockstar comes up with an official guideline, these concerns remain unanswered. Note that if you don’t reside in Australia, these rules likely won’t apply to you.

While the Grand Theft Auto community has plenty to look forward to, age verification could become a difficult part of the conversation as launch details emerge. Still, in the absence of Rockstar Games’ acknowledgment about the age verification requirement, the said Reddit thread is best treated as a warning about possible regional restrictions and not a final decision on who gets to play Grand Theft Auto 6.
